The ML55 is considerably faster than the G55.

2003 MB G500 & 2006 MB SL500 & 2008 MB 350 4matic - all BMWs are SOLD
BMW X5 is faster then both of them and hags the road much better then G55 or ML55. I use to have a ML55 just for a couple of months (one of the first ones) but its been sold and I got 2001 BMW X5 4.4i with sport package and all the toys. I tell you ML55 not even close + it has numerous problems ....Sorry. IMPHO X5 4.4i sport package way better then ML55. I’m not even speaking about X5 4.6iS and year 2004 year model 4.6iS will be replaced by 4.8iS with even more power to compite with porsche SUV very ugly but fast Caynne TT.
But bimmer is a bimmer - all about speed and just a little part about utility....
G55 AMG is not about speed at all. It is just a name and a very good one.
I actually test drove both G55 and G500. I did not see a big difference between them that can justify $20000 increase. I personally think this is just a name AMG. You know Mercedes had to have one…. So I went with G500 black on black, HK stereo, comfort seats, parkonic and NAV-CD collection. No regrets, I love my G.
I have both 2001 X5 4.4i and 2003 G500 both these vehicles are great and serve their purpose.
Good luck with your search.

ML55 is faster than a 4.4i

Unless of course the 4.4i is only a few one hundreths of a second slower than a 4.6is which is highly doubtful.

BTW: here are the results for 0-60 times and 0-100 times from motor trend for the 4.6is and ML55 and the 0-60 time for the 4.4i...

BMW 4.4i
0-60: 16.6 seconds

BMW 4.6is
0-60: 6.20 seconds
0-100: 17.23

ML55
0-60: 6.24 seconds
0-100: 16.48

Sorry I couldn't find any 1/4 times

I do agree with you in the fact that the BMW machines probably do handle better

At any rate, after being able to drive both extensively I would most definitely pick the G55 over the ML55 anyday. Can't beat the fun and attention that the G gets!

I think you are wrong about BMW X5 4.4i performance.
0-60 --6.7
0-100 --16.68

And honestly there is not that much difference between G55 and G500. Slightly wider fender flairs and slightly wider tires on the almost identical 18’ wheels. G500 already looks way different. This is my personal opinion otherwise I would be driving G55.

ML55 is faster than even 4.6is (and Porsche Cayenne S)

Comparison test in german

You can trasnslate it using Google

They state that ML55 has a best engine, but its handling is not that good as X5 has.

Lets not forget about 45+ more hp, bigger/better brakes, awesome sounding exhaust and owning the most limited production Benz on the market.

Sorry about the typo....

The 0-60 time should have been 6.6 seconds as stated by Motor trend.

I drove the G500 and didn't feel that it had enough power to make the weekend trip into the mtns here in Colorado. There is nothing worse than driving an underpowered vehicle in the mountains. You mentioned that there is not that much difference, but there really is, the motor itself has around 45hp more, which in that vehicle is the difference, especially up here. The only difference in the two that is not worth it is the suspension, which is way too stiff on the G55.

Although it may not justify the higher price, I felt as though I would be disapointed entirely if I purchased a G500, it is too underpowered for me to have fun in. A G500 would get left behind by most SUV's in the mountains. Cars don't run as well up in the hills like they do in lower altitudes.

I agree the BMW line is considerably faster then the AMG suv's I hear they are going to discontinue the G55 soon as its not selling very well I believe its a wayste also with all the stuff on the car its as off-road capable anymore the 4.6Is and 4.8Is are going to be crazy the Porsche Cheyenne Turbo is awsome I would take it over all of them anyday Although The G600 is stilll very much in my head.

G500 over G55...

A few weeks ago, I went to the Porsche dealer with the intention to purchase the CayenneTT. Literally, on my test drive, I pulled up next to a G555. I knew about the G500, but had no idea the G55 existed. I asked the Porsche rep about the G and his remark was of pure adulation for the Heritage and capabilities, while pointing out the sub par road handling. Well with a 993TT in my garage, I decided to get the G55, the epitomy SUVs, as I can get my speed thrills in my sports car.

After having earmarked 93K for the Cayenne TT, drove the G55. I loved it! I then drove the G500...hmmmm, very similar and MUCH cheaper, not to mention a bit more comfortable.

I drove the G55 again, still an amazing car, but could not get the added 18K out if it.

I then drove the ML55...very nice and quick, but not the G!

So, I bought the G500 and love it! No regrets....

IMO ML55 is the toned down version of a G55. Doesn't seem to have the power nor the brute strength. X5 is all about sportness until the Cayenne Turbo came out. Give me a day or two, I'll be test driving and checking them all out.

So far Cayenne is winning, 450hp is nice...

I seen a couple of them around they look pretty cool I know someone that took delivery of one not to long ago going to try to take a drive in it. The Factory videos look nice the off-road one looks nice to.

MB will be discontinuing the M-line soon and well unleash a new line to compete with the X5 and Cayenne which have considerably taken over the luxury SUV market as of late, but none the less MB has slowly taken the sport and luxury car market away from BMW and other competitors. Are their really any competitors anymore???

AMG

MBZ is on top...

Agreed...MBZ has an amazing line up! They have a car for everyone.

I drive a 993 Twin Turbo with 400HP that does 0-60 in ~4 sec. BIG DEAL!!!!! The new E55 will ecplipse this. Granted Porsches never built for drag racing (simply wonderful in the turns), the AMG tunes MBs are impressive. I have to map out my day before Im decide to drive the TT as it is not very practical or roomy and I hate to park it in the sun.

Now, my G500...that is a thing of engineering wonderment! I just came back from Tahoe where I did the first few miles of the Rubicon trail. I am not a 4 wheeler, but I felt that I had to test out the G. I followed a few heavy duty, heavily modified trucks. They were amazed at the Gs capabilities (as well as my nerve as I am a total novice). I simply followed the line and speed of the truck in front of me as I knew that if his truck could make it, I could too. Try that in am X5.

My wife drive a 740il...I like this car, but it pails in comparison to the S Class IMO of course.

Well, I am rambling...all I can say is that MBZ is the one to beat!
