2005 G500 Is it really worth $40K?
I'm considering purchasing a 2005 G 500 Grand Edition with 84,000 miles. B Service was just completed, and they spent $3,000 on Brake Pads, front discs, and put on 4 new tires (Continental). Clean carfax and looks to be in very good condition.
QUESTION: Am I crazy to invest $38K-$40K on this vehicle that already has nearly 90K miles??? Would I be wiser to buy a different vehicle...I could get a nice NEW car for that same money...But I LOVE the G500.

what country are you in? you need to update your signature to show location or else a question like this is meaningless.
in the US, a 2005 G55 with half that mileage can be bought for right around $50,000 so I don't see how how the lesser G500 with much higher mileage should be $40,000.
I sure wouldn't spend that much. Either keep looking or negotiate to no more than $35,000.
Just look at the spread on autotrader and you'll see the market. It has gone down a good step in the past 6 months since the release of the revised 2013 models.

It doesn't sound too bad to me. I got an 03 with less miles for 34K, at the time I couldn't find an 05 under 50K and I was looking nation wide. If you like it get it, these trucks will last forever as long as you take care of them.

When I bought an 05 G500 6 months ago, I found that the dealer prices were outrageous. More so than any other cars that I have purchased. I bought one from an individual for far less than what a dealer wanted - $10k less. And it is a much nicer truck than any other that I saw with complete records, etc.
Spend a little time looking for private sales. I think that 43k is high, but if you are going the dealer route, prices in the $40s doesn't surprise me.
Good luck!

I just got a call from my Merc dealer asking if I would like to sell my 2005 G55K with 55K miles to them for $47.5K.
Offer wasn't as a trade in as they had a customer looking for one.

if it was maintained, 84K miles is nothing for G class.
It is pricey because its extremely rugged and it lasts.
It is basically a military truck with leather seats.
It is also unique.
Many small things keep its price up, specially the 55K.
I would only buy this car with full documented history. Then again, any Benz I buy i only buy with full documented history![Big Grin](https://mbworld.org/forums/images/smilies/biggrin.gif)
earlier this year when i was looking for one i could not find 05 55K for less than $50K
Also, it is a truck, you need to remember that. It will not drive/ride like a sedan, even not like most SUVs.
It takes a unique taste to own and enjoy it.
I wanted one for a long time but after the cars I’ve owned (see sig) it was hard to jump in to and use it as DD. Not to say it’s a bad car, it’s different.

+1 ^^^
Not for everyone but it is a very distinctive daily driver...
A G55 or a G55K has been my DD for seven years.
Buy them used, even with a CPO premium, and they have minimal depreciation and even appreciation

Just to chime in here (sorry I haven't been on this forum in ages), I see others are wondering the same thing I am. It seems that 463 inventory comes and goes in "waves", and the prices are reflective of that. Right now there are virtually ZERO 463s 500s in the '05/'06 model year (best years because of the lack of the 7 speed auto) out there for under 44000.00 with under 90k. I was shocked at this myself. Moreover, looking at NADA for a bank valuation, it is still considered near $53,000.00 retail book for bank purposes.
Meanwhile, one state over, another MB dealer has a G55k with 9000 less miles for 47. Contrast this with a thread from 4 years ago (2009) where a gent was looking at 2005 G500s in the low 50s and they have dropped almost nothing. Yet occasionally there will be a glut of them that shows up all at once and dealers will be more competitive. I can tell you that black book average wholesale is only around 32k, so if a dealer buys one of these cars right, they're making a BOATLOAD of profit. However actual transaction prices at the auction seem to be closer to the actual retails.
I should add that while the extra flash of the G55 may appeal to some, in the realm of being a "truck" I don't think it's actually worth the trouble for a few reasons. The exhaust arrangement is not terribly suitable for off-road usage, the electro-magnetic supercharger went out on my SRT6 Chrysler Crossfire (nee' SLK32 AMG) and was quoted at about 7k for replacement and the design on the G55 is the same, and finally most warranty companies will not authorize AMG labeled vehicles under any circumstance. Some will, but most will not. In the 463, it seems that the robust plain jane 500 is the way to go.
