500 G wagon blown subwoofer

Hi there,
My subwoofer in my 500 G wagon has just blown out. it's a 6.5" Harmon subwoofer . Are there any after market subwoofers out there that will fit the dimensions of the factory installed Harmon that is in there now. if so, where can I find it online? Thanks in advance

I6 and V6 Diesels
I went ahead and purchased a unit to replace the subwoofer under the left rear seat in my 2003 G55 AMG, which generally speaking is pretty straightforward. My subwoofer was clearly blown as all of the foam that attached the paper cone to the edge of the rim was gone. Maybe someone was playing too much bass.

I couldn'd find a mercedes replacement part or spec for the subwoofer, but discovered its just a Subwoofer with Dual Voice Coil, which means it has two sends of connectors (left and right). The connectors can be run in parallel to a single voice coil, by simply connecting the matching L&R wires.

The size of the subwoofer is 6.5" and the depth is about 3.5" behind the speaker mount (you've got a max of 4" of space in the hole in the floor). I purchased a single coil subwoofer from amazon: Pyramid W64 6.5-Inch 200 Watt MidBass Poly Woofer for $20, cut off the existing plug in connectors and ran them in parallel to the single voice coil. The 4 screw holes lined up perfectly. The results are awesome. The Pyramid still hits the low, deep bass and give the car plenty of bass.

An alternative is the Pyle Power PLPw6D, the 6" is really 6.6" and it still fits. But the wiring is more complicated. I'll try to post the diagrams of the wiring in this same post later.

Hope it helps anyone looking to replace their sub.

Would love to see that 'wiring diagram'... Thanks.

Replaced with Kicker

Had same issue with my 07 G500. Found many subwoofers online that are 6.5 like the HK, but most were single voice coil. Finally, I found a Kicker which is 6.75in but fit into the shallow subwoofer recess just like the factory HK (screw holes lined up and factory grill fit perfectly overt the top). It's dual voice coil like the HK, so only had to snip the clips from the blown out woofer, strip the wires and plug into the new woofer. Works great. Brand is Kicker, 6.75 ultra thin subwoofer, 150w RMS. Hope this helps.

Second on the kicker. I purchased the 2 ohm twin voice coil 6.75 inch ultra thin and simply plugged it in. The part number is 40CRWT672. It took about 5 minutes and hits much cleaner than the original HK. I'd like to try the 1 ohm version for a little more punch, but I'm afraid it might fry the stock HK amplifier. No modding is necessary to fit this speaker.

Kicker part 43CWRT672 offers the same dimensions and wattage specs with a 2ohm dual voice coil and is ruggedized. Cheaper too - found it for a hundred bucks on amazon. Couldn't have found it without bryanrex though, so thanks!

PS sorry for the resurrection

Rear seat/ bench removal for 2003 g500

Hello, this may be a dumb question, but how do you remove the rear bench to get to the subwoofer, I can't get the rear seats out.

No need to remove the rear seats... you fold them forward once, and then you'll see another handle to pull to fold them forward a second time. That will allow you to see/access the subwoofer (and under the single rear seat, the tire jack). You may have to move the front seats forward in order for the rear seats to fold forward again.

Anyone find a better replacement than the Kicker?

Here are the Kicker specs:I've found these, but I don't know enough about audio engineering to know which one will perform better based on their specifications:

what’s the difference between 1ohm Vs 2ohm? Is the factory sub 2 ohms? Thanks

The factory subwoofer is dual voice coil at 2ohms each coil. The difference between 1ohm and 2ohm speakers are that 1ohm speakers have a lower impedance, thus can draw more power from the amplifier. The factory amplifier is designed with the DVC 2ohm subwoofer, so going to a 1ohm DVC setup may cause the factory amplifier to overload. The max mounting depth of the subwoofer is ~3.75", so that limits the choices even more.

There are not that many DVC 2ohm subwoofers available. I went with the Kicker 6.75" listed above (43CWRT672) but it didn't fit in my bench subwoofer cutout so I had to use a router to make the cutout larger (by roughly 1/8"). Another member with a 2008 had the kicker fit, but it was too tall so they couldn't install the factory cover. Another member with a 2012 said it just barely fit into the cutout and was flush. So depending on your year, your results may vary.

I found just adding the Kicker 6.75 to the factory system, in place of a blown subwoofer, was underwhelming so I went off the deep end and redid the entire sound system. Here's a few posts on my G55k build thread:

WOW! thanks for the deep thorough explanation. I have 2013 G63. Hopefully this can fit right in with no modification needed. I’m not looking for something too crazy just something Decent nice sound I can enjoy With the windows up. I hardly ever roll my windows down all year.

I'm not syre, but your 2013 may have a 6x9" subwoofer instead of the 6.5". As a good check before spending the $100, I would just take off the sub metal cover and measure the opening.

Dropping in the Kicker sub in the factory configuration only takes ~10 minutes, a + screw driver and a wire stripper, but if the sub doesn't fit it becomes a much larger project.

Yup, that looks like a 6.5". Maybe it was the later years they switched to the 6"x9". Is there any particular reason you want to replace yours? It looks like it's in pretty good condition. Since the amplifier power driving the sub will be the same with the OEM subwoofer or any replacement you put in there, you may not notice any real difference.

Here's what mine looked like for reference:

The Kicker 6.75 not fitting in my OE factory cutout, just by a hair though.

Used a router to make the recessed cutout slightly larger freehand (removing this MDF piece is a pain in the butt since both seats have to come out before you can lift up the carpet)

Sub and bench plate back in place:

Everything buttoned back up. (I ended opening this back up like 20 times but that's because I complicated everything by completely redoing the sound system with new speakers and a custom amplifier+dsp setup)

2008 G55 w/ Kicker

As reported by others the kicker doesn’t fit the recessed cutout for my 2008 G55. However the screws did align and decided to install it without the grill cover.

same in my 08 G55... I use my truck to haul and tow a lot and in the last two+ years it's been abused but still works great.

Hey everyone, I just had to replace the sub in my '07. I'm very pleased with how it came out and thought I would share my video here to help anyone else out. I went with a SKAR Audio 6.5 from Amazon and it is a really nice replacement. I left speaker, tool and parts links in the description.

Bought the updated kicker for my 2005 G500 and had the same sizing issue:

Kicker 48CWRT672 CompRT 6.75" Subwoofer, DVC, 2-ohm

Turns out its the way they added a plastic mounting ring to the face of the kicker that makes it about 1/4" too big in diameter. I used my Festool oscillating tool to cut the plastic portion off all the way around the speaker using the speaker metal outer as a guide. Took about 5 min and fits perfectly now! Grill went back on like OEM also.
