Buy now or wait?

I'm torn on whether to buy a 2017 G63 now or wait until the new G hits in 2018.

I'd hate to spend $150k+ and then regret it when the new model drives by.

From what I understand the new G will be very similar but curious of your thoughts.

Thanks in advance

Brooks

I'd love to tell you what you should want in a vehicle, but only you can do that.

MY17 is the last of the old school icon. If you haven't driven one, go do it - you'll either love it or hate it. To me, it's one of the top 5 coolest cars to own. I will never be without one. MY18 will undoubtedly be better in every way as it will be the first complete redesign of the G in 40 years. The ride will be better and it will have modern tech and conveniences that the spartan first generation lacks. I'm extremely happy that the new truck has ended up retaining the badass, boxy look of the old one, but it seems to be a little softer on the eyes and will certainly attract a bigger market due to its upgrades.

I say you need one of each.

It remains unclear if they will produce a MY18 W463. My guess is they will and that the W464 will end up being a MY19. It would seem MB would want to send off the W463 in grand style and create some "last model" version for loyal buyers. My 2010 is getting long in the tooth and I'm dying for an update but in all reality the new G will be significantly better and have downward pressure on 463 resale prices after a year or two.

People that own these trucks tend to be enthusiasts that do not have typical budget restraints. Demand in the first few years will probably be high and the market flooded with late model W463s. Will be a delicate balance and expect there to be a premium on the first W464s. Get your order in early if you decide to get one and hopefully avoid an market adjustment increases over MSRP. Curious how they will price the new model. So many questions.

I'm leaning on getting the last year W463 at this point personally so just waiting to see what happens with the announcement and timing of release.

My advice would be to wait for the new model. Although I love my G and would not be without one there are some things that need upgrading. My biggest complaint is the ride and handling. I'm sure that will be a major improvement with the planned independent suspension upgrade. The other option is to purchase a low mileage used vehicle in the interim. I'm fortunate because my lease will be ending just as the new model is introduced. At that point I can drive it and see whether I'll stick with the current model or opt for the new one.

Thanks for the replies!

Per this article the new G will debut in September:

http://www.motorauthority.com/news/1033020_2019-mercedes-benz-g-class-spy-shots-and-video

I drove a G63 today and it was bad ***! Admittedly I was surprised by the "missing" ameninities (push button start, multiple cup holders, the archaic instrument cluster, to name a few) but I am still leaning towards buying one now as the drive was just so different from any other car. The dealer assured me they are NOT upgrading any of the technology inside on the next version but I am guessing he was just trying to sell a $155k vehicle.

I think I'm going to wait and see what happens in September and if the changes are nominal I'll move forward with a 17.

Very tough decision!

I'd be cautious of the dealer. Of course there will be technology updates. After all, this is the first major change to the G in forty years.

Just remember you are going to loose 30% of your value the 2nd you drive off of the Lot. Most GWagon owners take really good care of their Gmonsters. If you got 1 that was a year or 2 older with Low Mileage, you would not be missing much. This car hasnt changed much. Im sure that you could get a 16 or 17 for a really nice price. I have a 13 and I Love it, and I have had a few small issues with it but only minor. I dont drive it much and If someone offered me a reasonable price I would take it just because I drive my sprinter a hell of a lot more. So I would Look around and maybe place an add on Craigslist or just ask around. Im sure that someone is looking to sell at a very good price.
