The best option is to go with a rebuilt engine with the same specs as the one you are replacing. If you start mixing things up...hold on to your wallet!!

Is that engine too small? do you need more power?

I agree with pdeacon on this. While not a powerhouse, the 2.8 M110 is a nice smooth motor. A rebuilt should be at factory ~150-160hp.

If you have the cash or the know how and time, you can put in an M117:
without too much electronics work I think. The later V8s would require some electronic know how.

Turbo diesels (OM617a) have frequently been used to replace the M110; and it's a relatively simple change. You do want to use a technician who has done the job before.

Agree with Dutch.
The 617 turbo is the easiest swap, most available and reliable engine.
What will change is motor mounts because of 2pc sedan oilpan interference with front diff, oil cooler lines 1 off donor and 1 off 300GD. Those are the bigger issues.

Thanks for the advice, we have found a cheap V8 G500 engine to swap. our idea is to use Haltech Injection with the same mechanical Gear Box, 4 speed. Please send us comments of similar experience

This car is for weekend use, you know, and our idea is not to use diesel. Finally we have found G500 engine, our plan is to use haltech injection and the original transfer case and mechanical 4 speed gear box. Please send us your comments

A big v8 gasser is going to A) take a lot of space in the engine compartment and I'm pretty sure that your 87 frame is going to be too narrow.
B) Going to put a ton of strain on components built for half the horses.
C) bring only a little more torque and speed to the pavement because of the gearing through to axles.
Honestly, I believe you will have to drive this thing with it's nuts tied or risk blowing it to smithereens.
463's had have frames re developed to accommodate V8.
I would find another M110 or as suggested an M113 or even go with a non merc engine that will fit and be comparable in horsepower. Audi, Lexus, Toyota even LS or buick V6 with turbo.
Check Club G Wagon parts. There is an m110 and autobox there for $900 in Cali.
