2017 Oil Change

2017 Oil Change
Can I do an evacuation oil change on 2017 like the older models???
I can't even find the dipstick much less the oil filter.
Looks like the engine changed in 2016/17. I'm surprised I can't find anything about his!
Help!

I am of course going to have Mercedes do their one year oil change in the spring. I bet I got 99 percent of the oil out, and the filter being changed out was a good piece of mind.
I didn't feel like crawling underneath and doing it the other way, had a new evacuator and wanted to test it out. I have the G63 model!

I think there may be a difference between G63 and the 550.
I'm pretty sure the g63 has a dipstick holder and cap but no dipstick. Don't know about the filter.
I just went out again and can't find anything that looks like what you are describing.
I am completely shocked this hasn't come up anywhere before!! I can't even find a service manual to buy or look at that even describes what to do.
Might be a good reason to upgrade from a 550 for these years.
Frustrated.

Yes, there is a dipstick on the 17 G63 and I did the evacuation through the dipstick tube! I have several size hoses and just used the appropriate one.

UPDATE,,, I just searched and don't believe that model 550 has a dipstick! But is checked through the on board computer. Get inside and get into your vehicle settings. You will stumble across it I am sure! If you are still stuck and don't have an owners manual, call Mercedes in the morning!

Hi there, I to own a 2017 G550. You should count yourself quite lucky because under the hood is an engine which is all AMG and do not have a dipstick. That is a handcrafted engine, but lacks the signature plaque on the top. Very potent engine, but unfortunately detuned for the G wagon. The oil filter and engine drain plug is easy to get to and is behind the engine skid plate. You cannot evacuate oil via a suction pump like I can on my G63 or the older G550's as I pointed out there is no dipstick unfortunately. Just drain the oil into a pan that will hold at least 10 litres. Be sure to underfill it by 200 litres so that you don't overfill potentially and get an oil overflow message on the dash. It is very tricky to get it right because there is no dipstick. Its a different engine all together. The process is very simple. 8.5 litres and oil filter took me only 30 minutes.
The oil drain plug is I believe an allan hex head. The filter is the same filter used on a G63. I hope this helps. Good luck.

Correct on most points. I spoke with my MB technician who is AMG certified today and he did confirm after conversations with Germany that yes this is a handbuilt Mercedes AMG engine and does not have the handbuilt badge on it. Mercedes was actually quite reluctant to even provide this information of where it was built for some reasons of their own. The engine in the S560 and the new G class is a variant different from the engine that is in the 2017 G550. If you look on your engine parts, do you have stamps of AMG on your parts? My truck is AMG stamped everywhere in the engine compartment, i.e. oil pan, tubing, hoses, and all other castings. AMG engines as you know only come from the AMG engine builders.

Sorry to disappoint, but your AMG Certified Technician is incorrect with his information.

The M176 is in 2016-2018 G550 (and the 2018 S560/etc.). The M176 is produced at the Untertürkheim plant in Stuttgart.

I am 99% positive the M176 in the W463 is NOT built in Affalterbach, and I can't find anything that says it is. And there is nothing that I can find which says it is hand assembled. If I am wrong, I will be the first admit, however I have not heard anywhere that it is hand assembled, and I was never told by MB/AMG Corporate Employees that it is hand assembled. Does anyone have actual facts, not word of mouth of if the G M176 V8 is hand assembled?

This is all very strange .I went into the garage tonite and had a closer look at the engine. As I said previously all tubes, hoses ,harnesses, turbos all have the AMG logo and have tags with part number starting with A177(M177 engine).
Even the engine casting has the AMG on them. Interesting though the ECM has the M176 tag!
I know the M176 is line produced and the M177/ M178 are made in Affalterbach.
My wife's G550 is a very early production model and perhaps Mercedes made substituitions to satisfy production.
This is what confused my tech and why he inquired to Germany and got the information he received before replacing the diverter valves on the intake.
I too am sorry to disappoint and believe my tech IS correct with his information. I would find it hard to believe AMG would send all the parts for a M177 engine to another factory and then call it a M176.If this is the case that would explain every thing.

I think you answered your question with the last sentence.

Easiest oil change I’ve ever done. Love the top mounted filter. FYI - the shield screws are 5/6” and the drain plug is 1/2”. No need for metric. A pair of car ramps help greatly to get under the car as it’s a bit tight. The extra space makes it easy to inspect underneath engine compartment. Start to finish = 30 mins.

I have changed the oil and filter on my 2016 and it was very easy. The drain plug is located under the motor and it takes an Allen wrench.

MBWorld Fanatic!
FYI if you're getting "oil level" too high after driving in certain circumstances (for me it was after a long gradual uphill then downhill drive over 10+ miles at highway speeds), there's a TSB out there to replace the oil level sensor
I got that fixed last time I took the G550 for an oil change at the dealer.
Great to know that the oil change takes about 30 mins. It does make me choke a bit at how much the dealer charges for it
