2016 vs 2017/2018 G63

Can anyone confirm what changes were made for model year 2017 and 2018 when compared to the 2016 G63. Looking to start my search for a pre-owned G63 and want to be sure I start with the right year. Any suggestions on equipment/selections? Thanks in advance.

I think there were some minor changes in 2017
* Flat buttons for the radio controls (especially noticeable on the dial pad)
* Larger screen with integrated bezel (flush)

The thread starter here: https://mbworld.org/forums/g-class-w...ld-school.html outlined more minor changes between 2017 and 2018 MY w463

18 from 17 has changes too! 2018 got new A pillar air bags. First time for 2018 (looks taken from the all new 2019 G-Class), the very rear side windows are flush (kind of counter sunk) and there are no big, clunky external rubber moldings like on the rear window and windscreen.
Hood emblem is a different colour, and the few of us that have 2018 models that also had 2016 and/or 2017.....2018 G-Class for sure feels smoother and softer (in a good way).

2018 also feels "tighter" in terms of inside noises. Not that my 2016 or 2017 were overly rattley, but 2018 is near bank vault quiet inside.

2017/2018 rear camera and park/guide lines are better than the 2016 plain rear camera!

Good to know. And I believe Apple CarPlay was added in 2017. Would you say the changes on the 2018 are worth the extra money when compared to buying a 2017? I will be buying used, 2018 would just be a longer wait I guess...

I don't think 2017 to 2018 is a big of a change as say 2016 to 2017! But, I like my 2018 better than both the 16 and 17!! I do not like Apple Car Play. Had it in my last 3 BMWs too. Just not my thing!

I do think the 2018 may have just some extra insulation since it does feel more "damped" inside (thus feeling more solid I think) than the older G's I have driven. Ever since Deutsch100 pointed out that the rear windows are flush, I can't help but notice. I did remember thinking "this looks clean" but couldn't think of why.

By the way, I don't know when MB introduced it but the auto start stop is really annoying and always defaults to on when you start the car. But hey maybe it helped improve in-city mileage from 8 to 8.5mpg

I agree. I had a 2017 and noticed the changes on the 2018. Some, not until you mentioned them here! The one thing my 18 does not have that my 17 had on the ceiling, is the rear roof hook ups for the rear dog net. But my 18 has grab handles in the back where my 17 did not. They are in the upper ceiling! The other thing I noticed is the brake pedal angle on my 18. In my 17 I searched high and low on the market for the drivers seat front extender brackets. With the seat all the way back in the 17, I was to cramped up to get to the brake easy. The brackets let the seat go back like another 1.5 inches.

In my 18 I never put them in. It seems like they have the brake pedal on the stem angled much more so it gives a bit more room to get your foot on it. So I didn't have to put the seat brackets in at all. I totally agree with the tightness of the 18 compared to the 17.

YES!!! Every G we have had since the early 2000s, the brake pedal killed my foot. I remember in our '16 550 and two '17 G63s....I used to almost get a foot cramp from the angle my foot was bent to use the brake. It is SO much better in our 2018s (we have two now ....Iridium Silver and Magnetite Black!
Cannot believe how many changes the outgoing 2018 G got! I really think they are/were trying many of the new 2019 designs and features to keep "beta" testing. LOL New windows, new airbags, brake pedal design, grab handles, improved insulations, smoother ride.....

Interesting! I watched a review

where the reviewer mentioned how odd the break pedal placement and I can still see signs of it in my 2018 but I don't find it too bad - certainly not as comfortable as say the pedal setup in a GLS400 but not that uncomfortable.

Thanks for sharing and congrats on the magnetite and iridium silver 18. Come to think of it, I dont think I've seen a late model 463 in iridium silver!

100% true about Iridium. Thanks.
When I decided to get a 2018 G63 (before the spouse had to have one too, LOL) I was dealing with 2 dealers. One dealer (Keyes European) had roughly 120 Gs in stock, yes 120 (95% being 63s). NOT a single Iridium Silver. The other Dealer Beverly Hills Merceds has about 12 Gs in stock, and they had this perfect Iridium with the EXACT black & red diamond stitched leather I wanted. Both dealers told me that for some strange reason, Iridium is the rarest colour for a G, whereas other models have row after row of silver available. IMO, the Iridium is a magical colour on the G, and I personally could not be happier!!

new in 2017 is the removal of the antenna stub in front of the sunroof in favor of a new flat antenna over the rear roof top.

Very interesting thread. Those are pretty significant amount of changes for an outgoing model, especially one year only. Has anyone actually dug deeper so see if the suspension changed or if the more solid feel was due to an increase in insulation? The brake pedal difference is very surprising, why didn’t they change this before?

I don't think so...there was however a suspension change from 2015 to 2016.
