Matte finish paint

Can anyone chime in regarding matte finish paint?
overall ownership experience.

difficulty in washing, preserving the matte paint, touching up scratches, etc...

does it hold better value compared to traditional glossy paint.

Thanks

Good Morning —I own a 2015 g63 platinum magno...matte...I was a bit worried about owning a matte finish...I will never own another black car again...lol...its a part time hobby keeping it clean ...lol

The matte has been almost as easy as silver to own and care for...no swirls and washing at dawn / dusk...etc....My car is garaged so that does obviously affect the care, but it has been very easy.. Now, some people are neurotic about keeping the absolute matte finish without any hint of shine, etc....Mine may have lost some of the original flat finish, but to my eyes it appears better today...in fact other owners of matte finish mercedes ask me how I care for it because it looks so good...Careful wash with Meguiars...microfiber towel dry and meguiars black gold spray wax every 2 -3 weeks ...

go for it...i love the color and receive nothing but positive feedback from people—-

Cheers

How do you touch up rock chips or scratches? Is there touch up paint pen available from dealership?

Platinum Magno (pictured above) is the only matte paint I would go with, as it hides blemishes easily.

Black is a nightmare once an area gets "polished" by an automatic washer etc..

you need to remove sap/bird poop/etc almost immediately, otherwise it will have lasting adverse effects.

Looks cool, but just need to mind it much more than traditional glossy paint.

Thank you for the compliment...yes..I have been very happy. The pedals are at a weird angle that seems to aggravate my back from time to time...but love it. For me, the G63, is like owning a much better Land Rover defender 90, a more modern 68 Ford Bronco, a speed boat(yes it drives and handles like my XSTAR boat...lol) all rolled into (1) vehicle with a magnificent motor to boot. Looking at the prices of Defender 90’s, a properly sorted out 68 Ford Bronco, the price of a g63 is acceptable...maybe even a good deal- Cheers

I use MB touch up paint and fine paint brushes....This car strangely seems to get very few paint chips...the finish is pretty forgiving and touch ups don’t jump out at you if done properly...you cannot “blend” a touch up or panel spray like you can with glossy, but the g wagon has so many angles and hardlines, it hasn’t been an issue for me...black is way harder to own—-

So MB dealership does sell the exact matte color touch up pen for your truck?

Funny you mention the pedals at an odd angle! This is really the only major gripe I have with the G-Class. Both my '16 and now '18 G63 have the oddest and worst position for the accelerator and brake. They should be like 6 inches farther recessed. They make one's foot bend so steeply and in a very unnatural position. Sometimes it actually hurts my foot/leg and into my back.

We have been driving Mercedes for 25 years, and have owned models dating back to the late 70s....every Mercedes car, wagon, roadster and SUV (many ML, GLS, G.....) have never had such a strange layout for the gas & brake pedal.

Wonder how the 19 feels? The pedals look identical :-O

Once the magno/Matte clearcoat is scratched, it’d need to be repainted, unlike you could do away with scratchX etc on glossy clear coat.

i do have to admit that mango looks the best on the G!

read an article that mentioned bird poop has to be removed within 15 mins or it will eat into the clear coat .
any experience or truth to that ?

Owned a 2011 G55 in Matte black and drove it 70,000 miles until 2015. Washed it once a week in regular brush car wash, never removed any bird poop. Just asked the car wash attendant to turn off all the waxes. It was slightly more shiny when I turned it in but still beautiful black matte. MB matte paint have a thicker double matte clear coat layer and are therefore less likely to scratch and chip! Dealer was amazed how well it looked when I turned it in and was even more amazed when I told him how careless I was with the paint. Enjoy your matte cars, no extra care is needed!

Thanks for sharing your version! So it seems like it is more durable than people make it sounds like...

It is made to be driven in snow and acid rain. Do you really think it matters how you wash it? Just don't scratch it because matching the color can be difficult by the body shop but doable with some trial and error and matching the black matte is easier than the silver matte just because there is less light reflection.

Considering a Monza brown matte color, have not seen it in person but looks unique in pictures.

White or Monza brown matte color ?.

Very hard to decide between the two exterior colors.... they both look good.

For sure go with the matte color. G wagon is a rugged military car, so a rugged matte finish is very suiting.

On the note of the matte finish, I went with the designo black magno.. I get my car in January.

I was thinking of getting a 3M or Xpel clear wrap to protect the paint. Is that a good idea?

The question i would ask myself is how long will that wrap last in term of years...then rewrap is necessary and any harm to the paint ?

I have full expel on my 458, it will last 5-10 years depending on how much it gets damaged, if it does any. I had 3M on my previous cars and it's not as good, it easily peels off from the edges even when wrapped under, whereas expel is a stronger bond and also better shine to it. In addition, expel is self healing so scratches will"heal" in the warmth of the sun. You can look it up on the net.

By the way, expel stealth is a "matt" finish PPF for anyone wanting to change their paint finish from gloss to matt.
