Thank you for the response. My chip is in the middle of the windshield but significantly smaller than yours. I’ll bring it to the shop tomorrow and see what they can do.

I’ve had EXOSHIELD now for 3 months and more than 6000km of mainly highway driving, and no issues. I would highly recommend this for all G Wagon owners.

Any idea if the Exoshield product can be purchased online and installed at home? There are no dealers even remotely close to me.

I think it’s not available to DIY, but here’s the website:
https://www.getexoshield.com/

Note that the drawback is that in winter environments the film will not last long. I’ve been told 6-12 months if used in heavily salted climates. However, they are improving it continuously and mine looks perfect after 3 months and over 6000km.

I’d rather spend $200 to have it replaced than get a new windshield.

Best of luck. I’m sure it can be repaired to full integrity. Exoshield can be installed over the repair If you choose to add it after.

I’m still not sure why folks aren’t relying on their auto insurance for glass repairs. I have zero deductible on glass and had multiple windshield replacements/repairs on previous cars without any noticeable impact on my rates.

BTW, I’m at 17kmi in 15 months with a couple of hits on my non-coated windshield, but no cracks or chips. I have no idea why some G windshields are so fragile and others are not.

Because not all Auto insurance covers it. USAA which is some of the best you can get...doesn't.

Yes, I used Safelite ever time and got OEM windshields from them. The best part is they did the replacements/repairs in my driveway and/or work parking lot in a couple of hours. For clarification, repairs were zero out of pocket and replacements were just my deductible, which in some years was zero. I’m not sure what my comprehensive deductible is right now, but my wife’s spider crack repair on her X3 last summer didn’t cost anything. My 6 Series windshield replacement a few years ago didn’t cost anything. The installer had just finished a job on a Lamborghini, so he wasn’t impressed by my lowly 6er.

Good to know. Guess I'll give them a shout then to get the down low on G windshield replacements.

I have also had the windshield feel like it was going to explode. I don’t know if the glass is thinner than the 2018 g63, or if it’s because of the horrendous cabin pressure that makes it crack, but both the windshield and cabin pressure is a huge problem, and is driving me nuts.

I picked up my 2020 G550 in December, first windshield broke in the first 500 miles. After waiting 3 weeks for a replacement $4,000 installed, the second windshield broke today 12 days after being installed. Frustrated.

How did it break? Debris strike the windshield or just cracked for no reason?

No idea how the first windshield cracked, started at the bottom and reached the top in 45 minutes. No impact crater. The second was hit by small object, the impact wasn’t loud - not even sure it was a rock, I seriously wonder if a bird dropped something as I saw it coming at the last moment and the impact was quiet but fatal to the glass.

So basically buy their insurance at this point, or get one of the films on it...or both.

$200 for install--SoCal dealers are asking $599!!!...$200 seems reasonable ---cheers

G550Sacramento (and others affected by cracked windshields), please be sure to contact the MB USA Customer Assistance Center at 1-800-FOR-MERCEDES (1-800-367-6372) so that you can voice your concerns even if you have already had your glass fixed through your insurance company or by coming out of pocket for the repairs. It is critical that we continue to apply pressure to the company and inform them of the true magnitude of the issues. Two broken windshields since a December delivery date is inexcusable and points to a manufacturing defect.

I agree ... have to log the issues. I took delivery in Feb and have three windshields replaced within 8m. MBUSA covered the third.

I actually think the windshield issue is linked with the overpressurization issue ... because of the extra pressure on the inside, the glass is more prone to cracking. I have no science to back this up, it just seems to me like they could be linked.

A truck on other side of highway blasted a rock that hit the windshield yesterday. It feels pretty bad but so far no cracks. The BRAY windshield film seemed to have protected me. Or I just got lucky.

I had my 2018 for 2 weeks now and got unlucky with a big rock on the highway. You guys had me worried about a 4,000$ USD windsheild !
i had it repaired with epoxy from professional windshield shop for 50$ (no garantee) soo i asked how much in case it cracked to replace.
1 shop quote me 1,500$ CAD, the other who does all the McLarens near me quoted me 600$ installed for a copy. Same manufacturer then the stock window except no Mercedes logo on the bottom right. If i want the originals windows. Shop 1 was 2,400$ CAD and 2nd shop 1,400$. Shop around guys.

I wouldn’t believe $600 for a copy from the same supplier MB uses. You can’t trust these guys.
From what I’ve seen, non original windshields will not have the heated elements for the cameras and will not be internally heated (like all 2019 Gs are, at least in Canada).

The 2018 G is very different than any 2019+ convos. Different in everyway.

The line by the rearview mirror is not a crack, that is used by the Lane Departure cameras. I did a double take on mine when I got it. Unfortunately the object that hit me on parkway ride (was avoiding trucks on interstate) split the windshield from bottom to top instantly last week. My 2014 never had an issue with cracks, but the new 2019 one's glass seems to be more fragile!
