flashing fuel level light on 2000 Europa G500
pull codes using STAR
smoke test all vacuum lines under the hood
smoke test all vacuum lines at rear evap setup. Remove pass side rear wheel liner.
a common leak is at the Y hose (120 part number) in the rear evap setup Europa had installed.
I used my OBD2 scanner to pull the codes.
P0455 - large EVAP leak
P1453 - Manufacture Control Auxiliary emissions controls
P1400 - Manufacture Control Auxiliary emissions controls
P1420 - Manufacture Control Auxiliary emissions controls
Will STAR get me any different information?
I didn't realize there were Europe installed lines in the back. Thank you. I have thought the light commonly comes on when I pull in my driveway that is on a steep incline. Maybe with the fuel sloshing to the back it forces air out the leak and triggers the error. Any recommendations on a DIY smoke machine?
Also, the mercedes fuel cap I bought as a replacement took some work to get to fit. I had to force it a bit to fit, but it turned easy once seated. I also inspected the original cap and the rubber gasket is in good shape. So while I don't think this is the problem, I'm throwing that out there. The new cap I bought is A 221 470 06 05. I believe it is the unit that fits the 2000 e class.
I use MBZ in Tarzana for maintenance I can't do. I don't know if they are familiar with the Europa evap setup, but I think if you point them in the right direction they could smoke test that rear area. I highly recommend them, but I fixed my evap vacuum leak myself.
These are overly complex systems- and while I assume it is a vacuum leak due to a broken hose, it could be other things like the purge valve under the hood, or even the K40. That's where a SDS/STAR read could help.
