Wow, this thing is The Bomb! It sounds like a real diesel, too. Check it out:

The perfect engine for the G-Class. I LOVE my G63 V8, but I would in a NY minute take a G350d over my G63!!

I agree. I'd get in line for one. Although I do think I would miss the exhaust note of a throaty V8. Probably harkens back to my hot rod roots.

Still blows me away that this new G350d straight-6 diesel develops max torque at just 1200 rpm! I know of no other diesel engine in a consumer vehicle that will do this. The present generation pickup truck diesels are fabulous for developing now up to 1000 ft lbs of torque, such as the newly upgraded Cummins in the new 2019 Dodge Ram 3500HD, but it needs 1600 rpm before its max torque comes online. Such a shame we can't get the G350d in the US. I concur, I'd trade my 2019 G63 (won't arrive for maybe 5 to 6 more months) in one second, for even more $'s than the G63, if Uncle Sam was not so darn ******

I traded a 2017 X5 35d for my current '18 G63. Doesn't the 35d in the BMW hit max torque also around 1200rpm? I remember I was amazed every single time I accelerated in my diesel X5. It felt like a nuclear freight train, and sounded like a rumbly diesel V8

I'm not familiar with the bimmer X5 diesel, but it sounds pretty awesome. I have owned Ford F350 Super Duty's with Power Stroke diesels, and have tried to keep up with what is happening in the medium truck market diesel motors (Ford, Chevy and Dodge). In these markets, the max torque occurs at 1600 to 1800 rpm, up through the top of the range, staying pretty flat all the way. Sounds like your bimmer was pretty kick *** sweet in the low end torque department! Just a crying shame we can't import the new MB straight 6 diesel into the good ol USA. Arrgggh...

OMG you guys are hilarious, all of this and the original poster doesn't know what engine is in the van he built? It's the same V6 diesel they have been using for years!

i have owned several high end diesel vehicles. So I’ll ask again. Why would you prefer a diesel G over a G63?

Hi. Did you read ALL the posts in this thread? Your post of just Why? made me feel like I was dealing with my 3 year old, being honest.

Torque at a very low rpm is the reason most people love diesels and when you also end up with much better mpg, the diesel just shines!

Yeah, I read all of the posts. Funny, I have the same reaction (is this a kid posting?) when I read some of the recent threads that have been started. So torque at low RPM's and better fuel economy is important for cruising around Beverly Hills? If the G350d was imported you'd choose it over the G63 because of the low end torque even though the G63 will beat it to 60mph by about 3 seconds? The g350d makes 443 lb-ft of torque at 1200 RPM while the G63 makes 627 lb-ft of torque at 2500 RPM. On the road there's no comparison as the G63 blows away the G350d. I've had 6 G's and use them extensively off road. First thing I did with my last G63 was to cut off the side pipes, add a lift, put on larger tires and head to Moab. I wheel all of my G's pretty hard and would still take a 63 over a 350d just because of it's huge advantage on the road. Fuel economy be damned, it's a G. Just my opinion.
