No vehicle is perfect. I could print a long list of love/hate about my Jeeps and my G. But my '95 YJ has been a mule for 26 years, and has no signs of quitting. It's MSRP was $17K. Just finished pushing wet snow for 4 hours yesterday with a 7 ft. plow. It'll still be truckin' long after I call it a day.

Thanks for this - spot on accurate. A cushy interior and the uniquenes of each snowflake can't kill the monotony after a couple hours. Even my shotgun riding dog falls asleep after an hour (lol).
JL Rubicon owner here. Even stock sport models are hugely capable. Yes, most Jeeps never see trails, but so what? A lot of pickups never haul anything. I do think that Jeeps are over priced for the technology you get ( or don’t get) , but considering how they hold value, it compensates. I would imagine that if you are cross shopping a Jeep with a G wagon, you are looking at the new Hemi Rubicon. Very cool, but drive like crap on the highway, compared to other vehicles. Solid axels.

Current model Rubicon is awesome. We rented a 2021 in Telluride this summer and took it over a few mountain passes. 100% confidence and comfort. Stabar disconnect and low range tcase were the bomb.
Plus heated seats, flip up roof, Bluetooth, nav, and my girl next to me. Good times!

I had forgotten that the G used to be solid axel. Do they steer well? The new JL Wranglers had some bad steering issues. No recalls but some steering boxes replaced. Wandered all over the place. Mine was good. I could cruise to Vermont and back at 80 no problem except my hearing was gone. I actually traded it for my E53. Got big bucks for it!

I drove my Jeep all over the country, highway and trails, never had “death wobble” or any issues. Some of the first model year JLs had some issues I think. I used to think Wranglers were trash, and maybe they were (I never owned one but knew people who did), but my JL was exceptional in every way and I was an extreme user of its abilities.
My G63 needs smaller wheels and bigger tires to make the ride my enjoyable, so that will be my first modification. I hate the trend of giant wheels -on any vehicle-but particularly on a 4x4.

If I hadn't purchased a JK brand new I'd have sworn it had been thrashed on and crashed in a past life. Gs strike me as very similar primates in solid gold top hats. Both vehicles are over the top on charm. The Wrangler's DNA goes back to the Model T, maybe even horse carriages. From the Pentastar on you can drive it at the limits of physics on the street like ... all the time. And with the doors and roof off on the freeway crosswinds will force your nostrils shut. Yet G63s unleash my dopamine drip. I expect to see pro athletes get out of them, and no matter who gets out, I'm glad they paid for it.

I haven't looked at the JL, but there's a world of difference between my '95 YJ and '16 JK. The great attributes about any model Wrangler are aftermarket parts (selection and availability), low prices, easy DIY, and plenty of maintenance info (MB won't even tell you where the G's battery is located). There's no comparison between the G and the Wrangler though -- I'll drive the G any day over the Jeep.

I agree that a Jeep can be made much more capable off-road much more easily and with much less cost than the G, but there's definitely something cool about off-roading in a luxury vehicle. The feel of the wood steering wheel in your hands as you navigate the rocks.... Plus, you certainly get noticed out from the crowd....

Once you get off the trail in a Jeep, you're still driving a Chrysler with the the noise, vibration, and harshness built in at the factory. I'll stick with a G.
