2020 G63 Spare Tire Key?

Just took delivery of my G63 and I was wondering if there is a key that is needed to unlock the spare and how hard it is to come off? I am asking because I got the spare case from my 11' G55 stolen from my car. I remember a company had created a 2nd lock for the older body.

Are the new ones harder to remove than the older body?

@Callihan509 - that does look bad ***, indeed!

To the OP's point though, I didn't realize it was that easy to remove the (likely expensive) cover. Is there a lock option for the new gen?

MB does not have an optional key lock in production as yet. The older style will not work as I tried that. Hopefully they will be made soon, my parts guy is to call me when they are available.

Looks great! Is that desert sand or sintered bronze magno?

Found this on the web. Ordered it to try since it says that it works for up to MY21.

Got the black latch but decided to just go with OEM anyways since I think the OEM looks a bit more high quality. I just replaced the screwable hook part and the cam lock part with the one already on the car.

Got it from my local MB dealer. The latch was special order but the cam lock wasn't. Latch was $109 and the cam lock was $112. However, you can also get the OEM cam lock from eBay for around $65

Why was this not a factory default? Were people losing the keys and Mercedes didn't wish to support copies? I just finished the install, similar to JW001, in which I bought the older latch and key lock, and I had to special order the latch across the pond. Drill out the existing rivets, use a rivet gun to attach the new replacement plate, attach the lock. The latch comes with rivets.

You don't have to drill out the old rivets. Just replace the screw hook part from the new latch. It just screws back into the existing latch that's on the wheel carrier.

I see. I suppose if I removed the snap ring, holding the twist lock on the original latch, I could replace it with the key set. Thanks for that insight.

yup. Those locks will need to be replaced from time to time. They don't weather well. Key will be hard to operate since the lock will get sticky. Just remember to lube it every so often

Exactly what I did. I ordered mine from UK. https://www.ebay.com/itm/302726668179
I also transferred the lock from replacement piece into factory latch, so didn't have to drill any rivets

I hope you didn't pay $250+ for this?

Check out https://www.ebay.com/itm/302726668179
It's the same part, just powder coated or whatever that amateur-style-painted black stuff is on that at 7x the markup. Yes, 7x the markup

It's actually insane that some of these old school business are doing this in this day and age, considering so much information is available out there
I personally had a very bad experience some time ago and will rather burn my G than ever give this guy a single dollar
