Matte Black vs Obsidian Black

I know color is a personal choice but would like to know what thoughts people have on which looks better on the G63 - Matte black or Obsidian black

I have Matte black but it's a pain to repair if it gets scratched. If you get matte, you have to PPF wrap the car but a smarter decision would be to get obsidian black and then have the car wrapped in XPEL stealth. This way you can get the matte look and paint protection at the same time

If I were to get a Black one I would get the Matte finish. It helps hide the dirt a little better and no matter what sheen you have scratches or damage would require the panel to be repainted to look good. You cannot polish Matte paint though so that is a negative.

Who cares? Which do *you* think looks better? That’s the winner.

I ordered Magno Black (matte) on my incoming G63. I wanted something different plus I already have a metallic black on a RRS. Matte gives the G some extra style as if it needs anymore lol.

I'm conflicted. I have a S in obsidian black which is excellent on the S but can't decide for the G

I've had a lot of black cars over the years. Can't go wrong with black. That said, I don't think that I would have even considered matt black on any of my other cars. BUT, matt paint seems to suit the personality of the G a little better than shiny paint IMHO. If you have money to burn, you could go with obsidian black and then have the G wrapped in Xpel Stealth for around $10K or so.

G63s and a few others
Go with metallic black.

I'm saying that because I have the matte, it is relatively rare and I want to keep it that way lol.

matte is +6500 over obsidian. there is a video on youtube showing the xpel stealth over obsidian and it makes the finish look almost identical to matte. seems obvious.

It will cost more than $6500 to wrap the entire G but that is one way to get the matte look and if you sicken of it you can have gloss!

For those saying XPEL Stealth over Obsidian, that is a great option but just keep in mind the limitations:
  • You will end up with a lot more seems as the sheets are not big enough to cover some panels in a single sheet
  • Certain edges will not be able to be wrapped around without disassembling the car. In bright light, those edges will remain glossy and pop out if the light hits them right.
  • There is a "cool factor" to knowing that your car is painted matte. Kind of like when a young onlooking kids says "wow your paint job is amazing" and you respond with "actually it's a wrap".

My car is already magno night black, but I haven't noticed any of the seams unless I'm specifically looking for them... maybe it would be different on a non-matte car but the edges are matte on my XPEL stealth and the wrap provides infinitely more protection for the standard factory paint compared to anything else, like a ceramic coating.

I have matte with a NYC love from being 6 years old at 10k miles a year. Not to mention many cross country trips and trips up and down the east coast.

It lasts much better than any other black color.

no swirls

Touch up can be done.

living in NYC I’ve learned to accept perfect will never be a word I could use to describe any of my vehicles.
