Arabian Grey versus Platinum Magno

Hi All!

Deciding between Arabian Gray versus Platinum Magno.

Any thoughts of why not to do Matte, live in Manhattan and car will be kept in garage mostly and will not be able to really clean it myself.

The Magno will show less dirt than the gloss Arabian; however, I really like the way Arabian looks so if you are the same you could get it ceramic coated, which will make it easy to rinse it off and look clean really quick.

When in doubt, toss the idea of matte out! Imagine a color that the slightest rub with a fingernail will remain forever. Or a passerby who admires the matte finish touches it with greasy hands to leave an everlasting shine in that spot. It is really difficult. My G3 was delivered with many marks from transporters getting in and out and the one time it went in for service, the dealer against my request, washed it and the detailer rubbed the quarter panel shiny. It is difficult for the most careful owner. Bottom line, if you aren't okay with blemishes in the paint, matte is not for you. My opinion of course and as much as I detest and swore off matte paint, I bought another one last week in sintered bronze. I will however pay the dough to wrap it this time.

Thanks I am ordering a 2021 g550 was able to get a late November Build, didn't want to wait 18 months for a g63. I ordered Arabian Grey with AMG night package plus with Titanium Grey Pearl/Black two toned interior. Only downside seems that the car is going to cost more then a base g63.

Your post is making me seriously reconsider my choice of the Night Black Magno. I feel like read all the threads here on matte vs. gloss and the consensus was that the Magno paint (while more work than gloss), is not as difficult to upkeep as traditional mattes.

What wrap would you be getting on the sintered bronze? How does the wrap affect the appearance of the matte paint?

I'm also thinking about changing my matter olive green for the China Blue before it goes into production.

The challenges of matte paint mainly stem from the inability to polish and the higher cost to repair if damaged.

With that said, the guy who wrote your quoted post literally has 3 matte G Wagons in his signature, so I think that speaks louder than words. Just get it PPF and don't do silly things like take it to a brush spinning automatic car wash.

What they said

Had a G-Class SUV with designo Night Black Magno (matte). Did Xpel the whole vehicle, touch-less wash, & could not see the difference between before & after the Xpel application.

Even before XPEL, my Magno Night Black was much easier to maintain than gloss paint

For the record, it's not the maintenance that makes the matte a challenge, it's a simple fact that you can NEVER polish out a blemish. Ever had those fingernail scratches girls put behind door handles? With gloss, you can fix it with wax in 20 seconds. Matte? Emblazoned in the paint for life! Once again, if scratches don't bother you and you enjoy the natural patina, matte works for you. If you are gonna be disappointed when you can't fix scratches you can't even feel with a finger nail, avoid matte.

The major players in the protective film all make a special application for matte finishes, but they will also be the first to tell you that the G is one of the most difficult vehicles to wrap due to all of the parts they need to remove. I am getting told that over and over as I search for a place to wrap the 18 I have coming. I am getting quotes from the guys who are great of $10,000 for the entire wrap. Craziness. I can fix a lot of scratches for that kind of money. I need to change my flares and roof to black, but the rest might have to be at risk and I will fix them before I sell it someday and keep my fingers crossed in the meanwhile.

only scratches that go beneath the clear coat are visible on matte paint. Regular scratches from fingerprints/hands/car washes are not visible on matte paint. Don't need to worry about swirls etc - That's the whole point but to each their own!
