Thinking of ordering g550 or g63, could use advice
I have a spot to order a car far later this year;
I am debating a g550 or g63, cost is a relative factor, but I don't want to wish I had spent more and gotten what I wanted....
Looking to trade my 2016 AMG GTS in to lessen the sting. The GTS is great, and I might kick myself later; but I find the times I drive it to be rare, and If I do it is stop and go traffic and the view of such a low car isn't as pleasurable...
Anyway, I envision keeping the car for a long time, but that isn't my usual MO. The dealer mentioned the upkeep on brakes etc to be more on a g63, such that a g550 made more sense for a daily.
Assuming I go g550, are there options that you guys suggest? I was thinking of metallic gray or one of the blacks and a basic interior; maybe add heated steering.
I had thought about the black wheels, but wasn't sure how it would look; not sure about the tire cover, chrome? body? black?
I tend to be a "throw some BFG KO2's on it" and go to the farm kinda guy; but I would imagine now taking this off to the woods just quite yet; But the G63 seems more like the street package

If cost is a factor go with the G 550. It will be easier to get a build on one and most dealers will do MSRP.
Black Grey and White seem to be the best colors. Night pkg is a must. I personally like the Black Wheels.
Black interior.
Whatever you do, do not get a light interior. Very hard to keep it clean, and very easy to stain with jeans and clothes etc. I have C63s right now with the platinum and the drivers seat is dark in just 2.5 years and 12000 miles. Thankfully it’s a lease so don’t have to worry about it.
I've asked the same question before and can let you know what my thought process was. As a disclaimer, yes price is one of the main differences but really--if somebody can afford a G550, they can afford a G63. It's more a question if they want to.
Universally it will be much, much easier to get a G550 allocation sooner and at MSRP. The more metro the area, the bigger the disparity will be. If you have a choice of G550 or G63 at MSRP within the same allocation time frame, to me it's a no brainer to get the G63.
If you are happy with a $140k-ish build for a G550, then I'd go that route. If you start adding night package, AMG line, upgraded interior, etc, then I'd consider getting a G63 (which is what happened to me).
If you will trade it relatively quickly, I'd go G63 if you can get it for MSRP. From stories I hear, trade in values can be near or at MSRP. If you keep it a long time it probably doesn't matter.
Also it depends on your personality--I love my Range Rover Sport but I spent the past five years regretting not spending more to get the full size every time I saw an L405 on the road. I learned my lesson-- I didn't want to spend $150k on a G550 and have the same regret whenever I saw a G63. I know others aren't wired that way but I'm being honest here.
Well, you've had an AMG for a while now, so you know what you'd be missing by owning and driving one I'd of course say go with another AMG because, well, you know.....life is short and all GL to ya!
Those with a G550 will suggest that one and vice-versa so try and find a couple to drive and decide that way. I can afford either and ordered a G550 since I could get it sooner and I liked some things on it more than the other model - I will not say what since that is subjective, and there were a couple options that I could only get on a G550. I did get G63 wheels and exhaust so I wound up making it the way I wanted and I have zero regrets and would do it again.
I could get either at MSRP, and the time line is the same....I have a build spot set for G63, but could change to 550.
If I pass on this, it will be a year or so for the next spot....
I will go back to the option list and spec it out in more detail;
What about the mat/flat finish? I am curuious if that's a fad; Once everyone wraps there civic's flat, we will rerturn to gloss colors as the norm
Absolutely no brainer to get the G63 in that case. Most of the 550 options come standard, you get 360 camera, better rim options, more power, and better resale value.
Get the 63 and throw some real tires on it like I did.
The BFGs are great but I have had them on my last few trucks so wanted a change, these look a little beefier.
I get the speed my M3 gave me, the noise I love and a safe truck to haul my kid to school winter mornings all in one package.

100% then get the G63. In fact your ownership cost will probably be the same in absolute dollar wise since the G63 holds value better, although both versions hold value better than almost every other luxury SUV.
Matte paint requires different care, but I doubt it's a fad. Gloss colors will always be the norm due to this, but matte colors have been around for 15 years now and are only growing in popularity. Before it was just matte black, but now many brands are doing matte silver, grey, green, brown, etc. The main precaution with matte paint is any damage will become more expensive to repair as it basically requires a respray. With gloss paint, minor damage can be polished out.
I had same debate and had a 550 on order but MSRP was 162k and got lucky jumping on someone else’s G63 order which was my dream spec for a cost of ~$200k including small ADM... My biggest reason to make switch despite higher cost is
1) amg and all the additional features you get including brute force
2) resale/retained value
3) cost difference wasnt a factor
4) some better upgrade items including steering wheel options
5) more option are included with 63
only reason why i ordered the 550 was because i didnt want to wait for G63 but got lucky. sounds like you are lucky to get one quick so jump on it... especially since you are coming from an AMG. having supercars, power means alot to me and 550 felt underpowered and i am not a tuner guy...
colors: i love my diamond metallic white but matte black seems to be a go-to choice... cant go wrong with any G colors. interior i went with black/red and love it... dont go light colors... too hard to keep clean
I went with the G550 as its "market adjustment" was only $5K. I was offered a G63 at MSRP + $20K that I walked away from. The $15K difference went further for me with option packages on the G550 than going into the dealer's greedy little hands.

This “market adjustment” thing is such nonsense. NOBODY should be paying above MSRP. While it helps with resale, it’s just dealers making money off artificial demand.
