2019+ G63 valved muffler internals

After waiting 6 weeks for a valved exhaust to arrive we found out it did't fit. The manufacturer was extremely prompt in refunding the money, so at least that was painless. We decided to cut open one of the factory mufflers to see how it was configured, and we found some interesting things. The valve on these actually CLOSES to make the exhaust louder. If you look at the way it is plumbed, the "straight through" pipe is actually not the one with the valve on it. In normal mode the exhaust is actually coming out both pipes, and when you press the exhaust button (or have it in Sport +) the valve closes and forces all of the exhaust out the straight through pipe. Since it is still inside the muffler there is some muffling, but there is less restriction on that side. We are going to try and fabricate something custom if we can't figure out a way to make the factory muffler louder in Sport +. I found it interesting that it is configured so that the closing of the valve actually makes it louder.

Great post and find. Thanks for having the cajones to cut one of these open. German engineering is always interesting.

Cool. Question you may be able to answer: I installed G63 mufflers on my G550 and moved the actuators over since mine had the sport exhaust option. Anyway, I followed the break-in as per the manual and I hit 1000 miles yesterday so I put it in Sport Mode for the first time; however, I did not notice any change in the sound of the exhaust. Could it be due to the G550 not having a Sport + Mode? What mode does the G63 exhaust get louder?

I’d have to try Sport only mode and see if that activates the valves or not. Sport+ for sure activates it. I’ll have it all back together in a few days and can let you know. In the meantime someone else might be able to answer it if they haven’t disassembled theirs like I have!

My understanding is the valves are variable not just open or close. In Sport+ or exhaust button on they are not fully open and don't fully open until past a certain rpm. The Renntech exhaust module tricks the valves in full open position without casuing a CEL and remebers the setting so you don't have to push a button everytime. If it can be done withput spending that kind of money I am all ears.

That makes sense, at least on my G550 with the G63 mufflers, since when I step on it the thing does get louder!

It's annoying that the Renntech module for the G wagon costs twice as much as it does for the other Mercs. I suppose it's because they have two individual exhausts, but it's still annoying. Based on my findings, I think the Renntech module actually makes them fully closed, not fully open. A friend of mine has heard the module installed on a C63S, and he said it makes it sounds fantastic. I'm actually hoping for something a little more rowdy than the factory exhaust can muster.

Hi, I just purchased the RENNtech EVM but doesn’t come with instructions. Any of you guys have any experience installing one? Should be quick if I knew where to go...

I contacted Renntech about this in the past but I never got it, but here is what I was told:

Basically, run the wires from the valves through this grommet in the cargo area. Let me know if there are more questions: patrickc@renntechmercedes.com

Thanks for the pictures, that makes it clear. Do you know how to remove the trunk floor? I don’t want to damage the trim.

I am guessing there isn’t an easy way to install a factory exhaust switch on G550 in the blank switch area in the center console?

I get that the Renntech comes with a key fob remote, but running to the center console would fill-in the blank switch and avoid adding another key fob to my key ring...

The Renntech module only works on G63/g550 with exhaust valves ( sport exhaust on g550) so it is only compatible if you already have the console switch.

That is great news, I am taking delivery in about 2 weeks of a 21’ G550 with the sport exhaust.

The configurator made it look like there was an empty switch there. The knew the G550 with sport exhaust was “valved,” but I figured it was on “auto-valve” and they didn’t give us the lowly 550 owners the switch.

Great news!! I must say the configuration tool on the website seems to have many errors.

Thanks for the info, I am rejoicing that I don’t ha e a blank switch in center console.

I hate to rain on your parade but the G550 does not have a console switch for the exhaust, nor would it be easy to add one.

Did it make a significant difference in sound? Worth installing?

The main difference is with low loads of throttle and at startup. You will also notice a little on downshifts. I think is worth it. I little expensive but you only live once

2020 G550
I have a 2020 G550 and swapped out the "sport" valved exhaust to the G63 OEM exhaust. When I did that, I'm not sure if the G550 exhaust works the way the G63 one does (Post #1) about closing the valve to make it louder - but what I found was in comfort mode, the G63 exhaust is in loud mode. Because there is no center console switch to turn it on and off at will, I installed the Renntech module so that I could do this with a FOB. So the interesting part is that when hit the renntech FOB button, it actually get quieter, but then when you hit the button to bring it back to OEM mode, it gets back to being louder...so I think that means that the G550 sport exhaust might actually work opposite to the G63........

Just as a note for folks that don't want another FOB to turn on and off - on my older W463 Quicksilver exhaust with valves, you could program the homelink buttons to the remote FOB. So I would turn the exhaust quiet/loud based on 2 buttons on the homeline under the mirror!!! (BTW - if anyone is interested in that Quicksilver exhaust please PM me!!)

I just programmed the Renntech EVM to the home link buttons on the mirror. Works great so those worried about another FOB to keep track of, you could just use the homelink buttons. Program it just like a garage door opener….
