My G has become a rock magnet

We've all heard the horror stories of the front windshield cracking from the smallest of pebbles. In anticipation of the barrage of pebbles that my G would encounter during winter driving, I installed PPF as soon as I took delivery back in January. With the combination of PPF and maintaining significant distance between myself and the cars in front of me, I thought I would surely avoid or at least delay the inevitable rock chip. Over the course of 10 months and 10,000 miles I have had 3 instances under the most unexpected circumstances. The first occurred in June when I discovered that a rock had put a hole in the driver side front turn signal. After $300 and a quick visit to the dealer I felt fortunate that I wasn't replacing a $3500 windshield. Two weeks ago I thought the inevitable finally happened when a Toyota Corolla on an empty highway drifted onto the shoulder launching a pebble the size of a housefly across two lanes and directly into my windshield. The thought of the dreaded window replacement sent me into a brief depression and rage in which I irrationally blamed the Corolla as if it intentionally caused the eyesore that was now in front of me. The third incident occurred today which is leading me to believe that I am personally attracting the rocks. I entered the highway at 50mph when a pickup truck merged into my lane about 60ft ahead of me. 5 seconds later I heard one of the most aggressive noises I have personally experienced within a car. A 1/2" pebble flew through the air at an impossible angle, entered the vehicle through the open sunroof and directly impacted the rear windshield causing it to ricochet within the cabin. My G now has a replacement turn signal, new front windshield, and a chip on the interior of the rear windshield. Is it just me or is it the G?

Just bad luck! Then again we are driving shipping containers on wheels.

There aren’t any aerodynamics otherwise the small rocks actually flow above the vehicle. Unfortunately that’s the nature of the beast how it’s designed. A small pebble shattered mine a while ago and looked like a bullet mark, came out if no where on the interstate, it’s crazy.

Rocks don't fly out of nowhere but gun pellets do. Someone shot my Lexus windshield about 6 years ago while I was driving on a 2-lane U.S. highway and the closest vehicle was 1/2 mile ahead of me. The damage is clearly distinguishable from a rock. From time-to-time there are local news stories about parking lot security cameras catching hooded vandals keying cars, drivers having bricks dropped on their cars from overpasses, and windshields being shot with pellet guns. There are a lot of crazy people out there who think vandalism is a protected "freedom of expression" right. They're even worse when they think their actions are in protest of some social injustice. Fortunately, here in Colorado, it's legal to drive around with a handgun under your seat.

G class and highways don't mix. My windshield has quite a few micro chips barely visible, had to look really hard. I suspect most highway driven G's have these. Lots of flat spots on these trucks.

G's are also exceptional bug collectors although a bit less efficient than Wranglers.

FWIW: I recommend Exoshield for your windshield. It does the job.

That's what I'm planning on getting. For an additional $250, they offer a windshield replacement warranty good for up to $3,000.

Is it me or the Mercedes?

I have a 2015 Mercedes S550. I'm wondering why the windshield is such a magnet for rock chips? I have had to replace the windshield once and have had 2 other rock cracks. 2 times I was on the Interstate and 1 time on a regular road. Is it because the Mercedes rides low? Is it me or the Mercedes?

Yup, 15 years now. Sometimes I refer to her as my wife, she's great. I figure if she can put up with me I should keep her!
