G63 vs G550 & variations/updates through the years

I'm looking at a 2015 G63 with 100k miles. Fastidiously dealer-serviced all its life. I also see later model 2016~2018 G550s with about half the mileage for $10K~$20K more. Is there a reason why one should get the later model 550 than an older model 63?

Also, are there significant differences between 2013 through 2018 G63s?

Thanks for any useful input

There were many updates over the years. Go with the latest mode you can afford. Starting with a G that has 100K miles, even though highly maintained, should give pause for thought. Not the least of which is resale value. Another $10K or $20K for a lower mileage, newer model is money well spent. Good luck with your search.

G63, G65
There was an interior change in 2017 to a larger screen on the center dash, and the back up camera is definitely improved over a 2013. Other than that, I think the G63 is essentially the same 2013-18.

thank you for your inputs. Is that the general consensus? Later model w lower spec trumps earlier model w higher spec?

I think it's a question for you yourself to answer. The truck didn't really change much over the years, some electronics upgrades being the main things. Really the big difference is that you're comparing a G63 to a G550.
What will you use it for? Do you need/want the extra power? Do you like/want the higher spec features of the G63? Are you more concerned with mileage and/or age of the vehicle?
Really only questions you can answer for yourself...

I was in a similar decision predicament, except I was more focused on miles. I wanted to stay between 20-30k, so that eliminated most 63's as the low mileage ones were above what I wanted to spend on my first G. I ended up with a '15, 22k miles, CPO, and the extra for 3 year warranty. I passed on a '16 with 60k miles I think.

So I gave up the bi-turbo, but honestly, any pulls are sketchy even with the lesser power, so I don't think I'm missing anything. Unless the upgraded suspension settled it more. Idk how AMGs handle, hopefully the stiffer suspension helps.

Within 1k miles I had a bent transverse control arm, not covered by warranty, so not sure the extra 2 years was worth it. I'll see, and maybe get a refund on it.

I got the control arm and alignment, but it still seems off a bit and it seems I'm always having to make micro adjustments while driving. But from some research, that might be normal. I might find a good custom shop for my next alignment.

Overall I still like it. It's smaller than the RAMs I've been driving for years and I've seen none in my area (I see multiple range rovers wherever I go), so it's unique. It does get a lot of attention, so I sometimes take my RAM places if I wanna stay low key.

I honestly don't know what I gave up from not going with the AMG, but I'm ok with what the 550 has. So I would say get the lowest mileage newest model at your price point. I think I did well and it's a pretty bad *** truck regardless.

the general consensus in my opinion is not to start with a 100k mile truck if you’re new to these cars. Do you do your own work? If not, i would go with a lower mileage g550 and if you go 2016+, you still get the amg derived 4.0 v8 twin turbo engine, which is more than enough power for this car.

These cars are built to last but things do wear out and while 100k mile cars are probably just fine, I’m not sure you’re getting that much more with a g63 vs a 2016 and up g550 to justify the price/mileage trade off. And be sure to check for rust on any g wagon you buy.

Thank you for the responses. Much appreciated. So I went with a 2015 G63 with 90K miles.

It has extensive service from the same selling dealer. Cooling system has been redone and all fluids have been replaced. Interior is spotless.I do wrench on my own cars but somewhat limited to peripherals like brakes, suspension, cooling systems - no engine work. and I suspect the M157 is not something I can start to learn engine work.

hey I am in a similar situation right now. Curious how your G63 is holding up after a few years of driving? Any regrets? Has it been relatively problem free or problematic?

Been great. Minor repairs were leaking PS hose and reservoir tank hose. Havent really driven it off road or on trips so its had an easy life under my ownership. Added about 7K miles since.

Despite everyone's warning about ride comfort, I went ahead anyway. I soon found myself reaching for the other car keys when I need to drive more than a couple of hours
