2021 G63 Spare Wheel & Tire

My G63 was delivered today and all looked great. One thing has me scratching my head though. The spare wheel and tire are not the same as the other four. I haven’t pulled the spare cover off yet, but I can see the wheel is gloss black and the tire is Continental. However, the other four wheels are 22” matte black and the tires are Pirelli. I’ve asked the dealer to find out if this is normal.

Anyone else notice something similar?

Hello...yes... it is normal...
The spare is just for you to get to the shop to replace the flat...so they do not give you a same tire as your normal one.

I noticed the same mismatch about 3 months ago on my 2019 G550 when I pulled the spare cover for the first time. My spare wheel matches the other 4 but the tire was a different size Continental than the mounted Pirellis. This apparently qualifies as a "full size" spare to the dweebs at MB, and seems to be MB's solution to fitting a single size cover assembly to a variety of wheel and tire size options. My spare was also "optioned" with a sticker labeled "Max 45 mph". Consider it cost cutting on a $150K vehicle.

...I fear bigger spare would involve paperwork issues @ various markets (dimension, weight, etc.) hence the STD spare for everybody...

Yes, it’s normal, it’s a 20 inch wheel in gloss black with a Continental tire. The detail shop had the wheel off and I was able to look at it. I have silver 22 inch wheels on my 2021 G 63.

I don't think any car manufacturer has to apply for special permission to supply a spare tire and wheel that are identical to the 4 that are mounted. Many people do 5 tire rotations. More likely, the car manufacturer has to meet standards that allow for a non-matching spare -- hence the sticker warning that the maximum speed for this mis-matched spare is 45 mph. I've never bought a car supplied with one of those limp-home compact donut spares, and I've never heard of any car manufacturer supplying a mis-matched "full-size" spare, before MB.

What do people do about this problem? Will they replace the rear diff if I actually have to use the spare and it fries the axle running at a different rotation speed?

I have the trail package with the Pirelli ATs on the 4 corners and a junky wheel / smaller conti spare on the back.

Do I need to buy another trail pkg wheel and tire and a reverse mount kit for the back door and ditch the spare cover?

Apparently this is MB's solution to providing a single spare tire/wheel size for Gs outfitted with 19", 20", 21" or 22" wheels so that a single spare cover fits. My '19 G550 was equipped with 275/50R20 Pirelli Scorpion Zero tires and a 265/50R20 Continental spare tire. This size difference results in the Conti tire turning 11 revs more per mile than the Pirellis, which is not likely to cause a problem in normal AWD mode for driving a few miles to have the Pirelli repaired and remounted. Still, I'd be reluctant to drive off road with the corresponding differential locked. My spare wheel matched the four mounted wheels, and when I installed Yokohama A/Ts in place of the Pirellis, I changed out the spare Conti with a 5th Yoko to match. I bought a tire cover from Boomerang (boomco.com)-- I posted some threads about this quite some time ago on one of the G forums.
