Exclamation Why is it so hard to get off road tires on this car?

Maybe I'm looking in the wrong areas, but I've been to three tire shops and they've been struggling to get a decent off road tire on the car. One shop said that they can't reduce the wheel size because of liability reasons, another one said my vehicle is "tricky" to find a wheel for that would fit those tires, and the third shop said they'd have to get back to me because the car "isn't in their system" lol.

I have a 2016 G550, came with the 19 inch AMG wheels. I'm trying to get the BFG T/A K02 All Terrain tires on it, and I still have some CPO warranty on it so I'd like to avoid any major modifications like lifts and whatever that may void the warranty.

From what I'm gathering online, I need to get a spring spacer kit to lift the car up a bit, then get some 18 inch wheels that will fit the K02s, and I should be good to go. Am I missing anything here? Any advice would be much appreciated, thank you.

More information please - what is the tire size currently mounted on your 19" wheels?

As you say, the main issue is the size of your wheels - 19 inch wheels just don't give you a lot of options for tires especially off-road ones. Go down to 18 inch and you'll have a lot more options even without a lift.

Hello,

They are P275/55 R19, I believe Pirelli Scorpion.

Limey's right - 19" just isn't an off road wheel size. A second set of wheels in 18" gives you plenty of options and will keep your 19" set undamaged.

Hello,

Yeah I'm in the process of getting these wheels: https://alphaequipt.com/collections/...ae1890513025lg

I think these should be much easier to find tires for..

Seems like a good choice at a price that won't make you cry if you have to replace one someday. Resist the temptation of a low profile tire - a taller sidewall will provide more cushion if you plan to rock climb. There's a tire/wheel comparison fitment calculator at http://www.rimsntires.com/specspro.jsp that you might find helpful in selecting tire size.

You can get the 18” wheels from prior years or even 16” wheels available in Europe with 20mm spacers - most are ET63 but there is a set in Et43 from the late G350d professional w463

The Alpha wheels have a 25mm offset. Be sure to compare these with your OE 19" wheels and any others you consider using the rimsntires calculator before a final buy decision and/or before deciding to add spacers.

Thank you everyone, I'm learning a lot more about wheels and tires than I ever thought I would.

I've gone ahead and did the calculator and heres the results its giving me. OEM w/ Scorpion tires on the left, and the new Alpha wheels w/ 275/70R18 KO2 tires on the right.

Is the only way to determine if there will be no rubbing to just fit the wheel in place? Or do you actually go and try to measure it out with a ruler?

You're keeping the tire width the same, the wheel offset difference shifts the tire about an inch outward, and the radius difference is just over an inch. Intuitively, I think you'll have plenty of clearance, but checking with a ruler won't hurt.

Brake calipers on the 2020/2021 restrict wheels to 20", as the calipers are too large. I just posted elsewhere on my woes.

The AlphaEquipt 18" wheels do fit over the 2013-2018 G63 larger brakes calipers, which makes them appealing. Not sure if they will also fit over the 2019+ models. Sizing up to a 20" wheel also isn't too bad with lots of off road tire choices but with less meat on the tires.

Newer models only take 20" or bigger. Mercedes Benz lost the plot or they don't know about Africa or Oz. Someone buy them a map.
