Question G class design

Does anyone have a clue if the new G would still have the class, power, uniqueness, and ruggedness of the old one, or will it be a pumped up ML?
is the '05 a good deal to purchase at this time?

thanks,

G-class R-class and M-class all coming from 'Bama. All are supposedly based on same architecture from what I have heard.

Mercedes will stop the production of the current G-class in a few months (probably may 2005, together with the last S-class). Reason: the G doesn't have a Euro4-engine and European law prohibits production of car-models without a Euro4-engine.

Land Rover will stop production of the Defender for the same reason.

A new G will not be produced in short-term. However, Mercedes will produce a long M-class and will profile that as the new G.

It's even not sure yet if a new G will ever come

The reason that G-Class production will be ending shortly is the end of MB's production contract with Magna-Steyr, not emissions issues. The G shares all of its engines with other Mercedes models -- e.g. the G500 has the ubiquitous 5.0L V8, the G320 has the 3.2L V6, etc. - the same is true of the G270 CDI and G400 CDI.

The W164-based G is going to be the next G for MB. There will be no other G. However, MB must continue to produce the current G for military use around the world, and towards this end, they have arranged for Bajaj to produce the military versions in India. Consumer versions are apparently also under consideration (but not likely).

It might be a 464, but not a 164.

Word on the street is that the military G's will continue to be produced at the plant in Thessaloniki, Greece, where there are already being produced.

No surprise, Bajaj has been supplying Thessaloniki since about 1999.

numbers of Gs...

does anyone have a rough count of the US G500s and G55s in 2005 and 2004?

i think i'd lke to get the last of the Gs, although it has a few endemic problems.

looking forward to your responses.

thanks!
