So I know 394,000km is insane, but the price is pretty crazy too 47,000$ Canadian. Assuming it passes inspection at dealer, what do you guys think? Reliability ok? Too risky?

Damn that's a lot of Ks! I wouldn't touch it, I took my time and found a one owner 08 G55 w 60k miles for 55k just before COVID skyrocketed the prices.
What part of Canada are you in? There's a reputable G guru in Victoria that's always got something in his fleet, he may have a scoop on some other vehicles.
Is it the price or the year you're gravitating towards more? Re: my purchase, after driving the G55k (supercharged) I was blown away and immediately stopped looking for newer models and snagged it same day.
I'd go check it out at the very least, but would probably leave it at that.

I guess the year matters the most, so it looks modern and has at least some good features. But the last thing I want to do is buy a piece of junk. Originally Posted by almostordinary

I’m in Montreal. I assumed an inspection would give me the answer, but now I’m not sure anymore.

Ahhh east coast, so probably a lot more salt on the roads. W that many miles that was definitely a year round use truck, which is great, but not so much for winter salt and the likely hood of rust.
Go check it out, but don't let the price bait you into something that you can't get out of.
Would it happen to be this one I found after a cursory search?

If it is, just go ahead and send the money to me. I'll keep it safe for you.

I usually shy away from looking at anything w facelifts, W463s or any car for that matter as they usually are ways to hide other crimes and get away with it.
Also, Im not a detective when it comes to the differences of the model years, but I thought the 2011's had the updated mirror housings... There are no more interior shots to see the other upgrades, so that alone makes me wonder if it's even a 2011 model, strike 2.
Strike 3 is def going to be mileage for me. But I think some of the other more seasoned vets should also weigh in....

Fair points for 1 and 3. 2 I’m not too worried about because on Kijiji he included a photo of the vin, and it does say 2012. Are G wagons really a money pit? Are they reliable?Originally Posted by almostordinary

Depends what you do to them and how you service them.
I put about 20k into mine right out the gates, but I wanted to build it up and change quite a bit so I can offroad, tow my bikes and project vehicles.
It's got its quirks, but its been more reliable and more enjoyable to drive over every flavor of landrover / rangerove I've ever owned and any jeep I've ever borrowed/rented.
Depends what you want to do w it honestly. It's rugged and capable of going off roading w the best of them.
On my last production I had my company rent a 2022 GLC and GLE so I could compare the two for the misses next car. Both of those were more comfortable to drive in every single category. But won't do the utilitarian things I love my truck for.
Go drive a couple and see if it scratches an itch. First time I drove one I knew my British truck days were over.

If it sounds too good to be true, it isn't. I've never kept a vehicle past 150 km, and would never consider buying one with twice that on its clock. But if your objective is a project vehicle, go for it.Originally Posted by BTFanC300

I would stay away. Just the for sale pictures alone say the person really doesn't care about it much. It may be in good shape visually, but with that many miles under its belt, you're talking about major service to the drivetrain, axles, motor and transmission.
Budget things in like:
$10k for servicing the axles - new seals, bearings, etc.
$5k to replace all the bushings
$3k to replace shocks and springs
$2-3k for engine servicing
I wouldn't even say $47k is that great of a deal. Now if it was $37k, that would be a different story.

Even at $37k CAD ($29k USD), I would still be wary, knowing any issues with the engine, trans, or drivetrain, I would have to sink 10-20k into it just to get it running. Then again this one may be a lucky case.
We own Two G550s. 2013/2014. Both purchased before the spike in prices. The vehicle is rugged, reliable and has a ton of utility.
all that said: if the truck has 350k in and around Montreal ( harsh winters and road salt) you will definitely NEED a quality Pre purchase inspection- if it checks out and the CARFAX comes back indicating regular MX by Mercedes’ then go for it ( A and B services are done on alternate years)
if you can’t verify regular ( professional MX ) performed on the car - I would pass
recently I happened to see many Gs listed in Dubai - google it, reasonable prices (reasonable is relative ) and the dealers will ship to you
if you buy a desert car all the same MX issues will apply but you can be reasonably sure that corrosion will not be a factor
good luck and you will find a great G - keep looking and do your due diligence

And be sure that the inspection includes compression tests on all 8 cylinders. Mileage alone isn't the last word on vehicles driven mostly in metro areas. The last time I drove in Montreal, it took 3 hours to go the last 10 miles to the airport. That was 3 hours of engine wear, not to be misconstrued as 10 miles of engine wear.

That's a lot of mileage, also the whole aftermarket Brabus element alone would turn me off. I'd wait for a better vehicle to come on market, be patient.
