G550 4x4 Squared trade-in value and maintenance

I am considering a 17/18 G550 4x4 Squared and was curious of anyone has real world experience with maintenance cost. I have heard leaky shocks, brakes and tires can be expensive, but curious if there are other known issues.

Also I am curious if anyone has tried to trade-in a Squared. If so, I would be really curious what the dealer offered you (and your milage).

I have never tried to sell mine having just got it but so far it is my all time favorite vehicle that I have owned. It does everything I need and more and does it all very well. I doubt I will ever sell it.

Youre putting the cart before the horse here. I think first you need to figure out if you can live with the maintenance. Worry about the resale after. Life is too short for consternation

Bizarre advice. Due diligence is done with all the information possible at hand. Why decide whether he can live with maintenance only to later learn he doesn’t want to deal with the depreciation?

Get extended warranty if you have any concerns. Good insurance policy to have.

Built 2008 G55 & one big 80 Series LandCruiser !
Have you driven a G much less a 4x4 Cbass ?? pretty open questions, that don't seem to indicate experience with G's in general... it has a far narrower use case then a normal G- stock or modified....

what's your rationale for a 4x4 over a 63 or 550 ? use -case and prior vehicles that the collective might be able to share relevant perspective on ?

Very simple answer. I have a 17 4x4 with 33k miles. If I could daily it I would, but it’s hard to park in garages. That said:

1) it’s my favorite car of all my cars
2) it’s absolutely awesome and completely insane
3) it’s way easier to drive than many people make it out to be - way better than regular 18 and earlier Gs (which I have) - it’s mostly due to the wider wheelbase
4) in those 33k miles I have had one leak of a fluid in the portal axle. That’s it. No other maintenance issues at all and no issues with the wheel flares.
5) still on my original tires with plenty tread left to go
6) idk about resale because the use case is hard here and it just doesn’t work for some folks. But this is definitely a truck to hang on to … the new one doesn’t look right and they will make too many of them. This one is the collectors car.

Car is rock solid. Car loves to be driven and people love seeing it. Funny enough I parked it at a store a bit ago, came back out and a new G63 4x4 parked next to me (you know, before we found out that the real axles falls apart) and there was a scrum of kids around. 11 of 11 liked mine more - the original boxy style hiked up high on those portals is an absolute look for the ages.

Get the truck. You will LOVE it as long as it’s not your DD because at times the height is impractical. But if this is a spare car, spend no more time thinking about it - as long as the one you’re spying was well looked after.

send pics!

This all day. I had less than 20K miles when I got my 2018. So far it has been flawless. Amazing vehicle.

Maintenance is the same as G500/G550, but you fave to add a portal axle oil change every 30.000 km (18.750 miles) to maintenance schedule.
I had a couple of small electric issues, but they were not squared specific. I had to change front brake pads after 10.000 miles, pads cost around $400. I do not see any difference in tire wear, I guess it depends on where and how you drive.
I agree with other guys saying that this is an awesome vehicle, insane but easy to drive. My all time favorite 4x4.

It's my favorite car just to sit and admire the BEAST!!
Not really much to pay in maintenance besides oil change, portal axel oil, and transfers case!!
I bought mine new in 2017 and now it has about 14K miles.
  • May be paid about $4-$5K in maintaining it over the last 6 years, and that includes changing the wheel speed sensor.
  • Had a leak in the back from one of the shocks, and the dealer said it needed to be replaced and was $3500.00 for one side!! didn't do it and it going fine for a year now!!
  • Had to change the wheel speed sensor on the same wheel that had the leak.
  • The tire almost new condition, and FYI took it off road multiple times!
  • Breaks seem to be fine no issues.
  • Gas: Lucky if you average 11 MPG.
  • Wind Noise: is way more than an average G wagon, due to the height and the light bar.
  • Everything else is just fine and I personally don't think this car will depreciate more than this, I believe it still holds decent value for collectors.
  • It drives way better than the regular G550 or G63 2018 models!!
  • I was thinking of trading it for the new one and I was offered 170K a few months ago, but something is really off with the new one, it is a way too soft-looking truck compared to the pre-facelift one!!

This Truck just puts smiles on people's faces, if you driving or those who are looking at it driving by.

Just love it.

Thanks for all the information
I am in the market now as well
we bought a 2023G 63, owned it for about seven months and then parted ways
my concern was portal axle maintenance so thank you for the reassuring advice
we had a unimog growing up :-) I’m looking forward to that driving position again!

I’d imagine getting in and out of it would be a bit of pain. Also, it’s height won’t fit into standard indoor parking right?

otherwise, it’s even cooler than the g63 4x4 imo due to its height and rawness. At about $165k used these days, it’s a good value for a solid example

I have a '17 Squared with 5,8xx miles for sale. Bought for my wife from Graham Rahal performance (GRP) about five months ago. In fact, its still listed on the "sold" portion of their site. Long story short, she needs a third seat that wasn't part of the equation when purchased. This thing is listed on Autotrader only at this point. There is a link to the pictures in that ad. She has put all of 300 miles on it. I may just keep it though as the wholesale numbers from dealers bombarding me from that ad have been complete hogwash...and the thing to me is just super easy and fun to drive.
