Any idea how to remove the rear seat headrests on a 2010 G550? I've gone as far as removing the rear seat backing and there doesn't seem to be any obvious way to remove them.
There's a clip on each head rest posts that you need to remove to pull the head rest out. I just used a larger screw driver and pried it off. Once those are off the headrest will slide right out. A half word of warning, putting the clips back on is more difficult than removing them and requires some force.

My dad had a 2002 with regular removeable headrests. For some reason, Merc chose to redesign a component that had no issues and replaced it with a more complicated and frustrating design.
It really is a terrible design because it's a 'friction' up and down movement that is very difficult to adjust, and if you reach the 'top' of the travel, it locks in place. Then, the only way to lower it is to remove the back of the seat and remove the clips. Truly a head scratcher. And then add to the fact that you can't fold the rear seats up completely unless the headrests are in the lowest position...
For those of us who will have to replace (actually create from scratch new ones...) headrests for the rear seats, is there any documentation that I could provide the upholsterer guy as to what he should be on the lookout for or what to do? The situation is that the current owner of the vehicle that I'll be purchasing hired some "wanna be human" to re do the interior and among the many screw ups that person did, he did not replace/re install the rear headrests! Now I need to retrofit headrests for the rear seats. Yes, brand new seat covers and no provision at all to install headrests for the rear seats.
Take a look:
All you have to do it lift up all the way. Then best to hook arm under it and forcefully lift it up. Beware to not knock yourself out!!! It takes a GOOD amount to force it up to do it. I left my middle on out all the time and easy to just slide them back in place when needed.
