Hey Gang,
After three months of ownership, my parked truck was hit by an elderly lady who backed out of her driveway like a racecar driver 😳 - I was at home at that time...
She hit the truck so hard that it damaged the minivan parked 4 feet behind!
The damage is still unclear; the truck was towed away to my friend's MB-certified shop; waiting for the insurance rep to show up to open the hood (it would not open normally anymore so is the cargo door)
Looks like some oil leaked, but I am not sure of the source
The biggest concern is the loss of value in case the truck is not totaled and the repairs are feasible...
Your suggestions and advice are very highly appreciated!
yikes..... how bad is the rear end ? is the fluid from your radiator or front coolers ? be prepared to push for a HUGE diminshed value claim if they do not total it out..... just our mentioning that in our discussion with the girl's insurance who rear -ended our G63 and pushed it into a Raptor to wipe out the front as well ensured they wrote the claim as full new parts and all in to get it to hit the totalled ratio.....there are I think 7 coolers/ radiators and on our G the motor had shifted. The rear end ironically was almost jsut a bumper skin and supports. sadly you likely need to consult a lawyer as well on the front end of this....
truly sorry for that... and the likley loss on the G...
Sorry to see this, hurts my eyes too. Hopefully not totaled, claim vs value might be low enough to warrant proper repairs. Of course insurance will need to compensate for lost value but on the surface it look repairable, of course what happened under the hood might be the decision maker. G's are built tough. Good luck!
I find the result of the accident odd in the sense that the hood really took a hit, but that is pretty high on Gs and not sure how it got hit so high and not cause a scratch (apparently) to the bull bar. It's also "concerning" how the flare and headlamp surround are shifted to a side, but expected after seeing the result of the door skin on the black vehicle. Doesn't look like the repairs will justify a total loss, but you never know.
Back in 2018, I had an Audi RS5 and the damage looked "minimal" until the hood was opened and the adjustor saw that the hitch from the pickup truck had gone thru my front grille and radiator, and engine block (I was stopped and someone rear ended me so hard that I was pushed into the vehicle in front of me). I had to settle for an amount that was 2/3 of the current market price, but my other choice was to have them repair it with no guarantee that it would be fixed properly and the bill could not surpass the settled amount. Took the check, licked my wounds, moved on. My ex car has changed hands approximately four times since my accident and everyone still struggles to make it work properly. The person who bought it from the insurance company told the next seller "never been in an accident...".
You seem to be pretty cool about this whole incident. Most of us would have choice colorful words to add if this happened to us.
The term you are looking for in insurance-speak is 'diminished value'. Standard settlement seems to be 10%-15% additional to the current value of the vehicle, plus cost of repairs.
Thank you, z168!
Unfortunately, the truck was totaled by the insurance company after the estimate to repair came at $56K 😳
It was an amazing machine to own for two months; will be looking for another one once I get the funds from the insurance.
Wow! That $56K figure took me by surprise! Any big ticket items that drive the price that high? Chassis got bent? In any case, hope they pay you market price for it.
Sorry, but glad it got sorted that quickly..... best of luck in finding the replacement, happy to put eyes on any G either in TX or VA, or while travelling...

Thank you, SO MUCH Texas E63! Hoping to find a replacement soon... Will be looking for 2017-2018 models.
Sorry to hear about the damage, but overall it's good they decided to total it out vs repairing. In these multi-panel accidents, especially the G that is basically hand 'massaged' to fit together, any hit will cause weird gaps in completely unrelated areas.
Just for reference, if you are open to sharing, did they provide a breakdown on how they arrived at the $56k repair cost?
Could easily add up when you consider:
- Fenders
- Bumper
- Headlight
- Headlight Bucket
- Hood
- Coolers up front
- Radiator
- Rear Bumper
- Rear Door
- Any tweaking in the rear generally results in the body kinking (big $)
Thanks for the breakdown. Really great info and numbers here.
17k for a frame replacement! Definitely a big ticket item and not something that should just be repaired on something like a G with huge diminished value implications.
Good luck on your search for the next one. There seems to be a cooling of the G market overall so hopefully you can find a good replacement.
Yup Frame rails being bent and the 7 cooler/radiators plus shifted motor and torn harness put our 63 wreck at 73k... but it still was a fight as it only had 28k on it.
Might be able to find a nice G65, now that prices seem to be settling on the more recent vintages.....
Dealing with insurance and repairs can be a hassle, especially when you're not at fault. A while back, my cousin had a similar situation. His car got rear-ended at a stoplight, and the whole process was a nightmare until he got in touch with a good lawyer. They helped him navigate the insurance process and made sure he got fair compensation for the damages. So, if you're worried about the value loss and repairs, maybe consider reaching out to a truck accident attorney Sugar Land. They could offer some valuable guidance in this sticky situation.
