Mercedes-AMG G63 Edition 55 celebrates brand anniversary

A special AMG edition of the Mercedes G-Class has been unveiled to celebrate 55 years of the AMG brand.

Based on the Mercedes-AMG G63, the Edition 55 is only available in either Obsidian Black or G Manufaktur Opalite White, with both colours featuring a side stripe showing a close-up of the AMG badge.

The Edition 55 sits on 22in matt-grey wheels, while many exterior details finished in gloss black. The fuel filler cap is finished in chrome, with AMG engraved into it.

Inside, black and red leather covers most of the cabin, while carbonfibre details can also be found, and a number of Edition 55 badges mark it out from the standard G63.

Mechanically, it's unchanged from the regular G63, so it has a 577bhp twin-turbocharged 4.0-litre petrol V8 that can propel it from 0-62mph in 4.5sec and on to a top speed of 137mph.

UK prices are yet to be announced, but the car will cost €299,222 in Europe – equivalent to £248,915. Order books are open now but will close in November.

Mercedes-AMG CEO Philipp Schiemer said: "The success story of Mercedes-AMG over the past 55 years is simply impressive.

“The same applies to the G-Class, which has remained true to itself for over four decades in the course of its unique career. Its long history and still genuine character makes it the perfect first well-wisher for me on our 55th birthday.”

So no mechanical changes, throw on a tacky sticker and some badges and presto you got yourself a higher MSRP!
No thanks, I'll customize mine with the options provided for the normal G63.

They have to make up for the loss of the Russian market. The edition 55 filler cap is chromed to remind the owners that premium gas is now avg $5.5 per gallon lol!

so this special edition likely marks the end of this engine too..the M's are getting the new S68 (mild hybrid), so 2023s in all probability could have the 48v too...

Sincerely doubt it. Dont understand this angle that keeps getting posted on here to encourage FOMO. Mercedes just released the new SL with the same V8. Same with the new S and they have the 4x4 squared upcoming as well if the plethora of spy shots are anything to go by. The G, S, SL etc top the range cars will be the last to lose the V8.
Also if it was truly the end, they would call it the "Final Edition". Just like every other model that came before it which was ceasing its setup.

Yes it has no wow factor 99.99% of people won't even know about the 55 meaning apart from the die hard merc driver its not like its a V12 or something you are 100% right

Could say the same for yourself my friend. At least I provided 3 reasons with historical precedent instead of just saying " I think the V8 will stay".
