Mercedes CEO confirms smaller version of G Class coming

Tell me if you've heard this before--the Mercedes CEO confirms in a few years they will release a smaller version of the G Class to reach down market.

Hate to be a gatekeeper, but I hope it does not end up like how Audi and Mercedes do sedans where it's the same car but different sizes. My guess is it'll be more G-like than the GLK and GLB "homages" of recent years. I had heard that Mercedes wanted to sorta spin off the G brand to include sub-models.

Love this quote lol: “The G Class is an icon, it is difficult to get one. If you do get one you feel like it’s almost like your birthday and we will be very very careful managing volume with the G Class,” he said.

A restyled GLE? Similar approach as Hummer with the H1/H2/H3?

… and now we’ve officially answered it: Yes, there will be an addition to our G-Class family. Yes, there will be a “little g-Class”.

I know there is a lot of emotion and dedication towards the G-Class – inside and outside of our company. We know what legacy the mighty “G” has built over decades. These are some big shoes to fill. I promise we don’t take this lightly – and we know what matters.

The “little g” will be all-electric. It will be instantly recognisable. It will be extremely capable on and off the road. It will honour the original icon. And it will be a lot of fun to drive.

We’re excited. What about you?

The teaser image hints at similar G-Class styling such as a rear mounted spare. Granted, it is still early days, but I have a feeling it could very well be more so like the new LR Defender which is based on a unibody platform but still designed for off-road use. With it being all electric, perhaps it will be premiering the next generation EV platform for MB since it has not been teased or associated with the upcoming compact MMA platform.

If I was a betting man, the compact G will have a 4 cylinder under the hood. 550 loses v8 in 2025. The amg will become more exclusive and prices will increase. Just my opinion. (First post, my apologies if done incorrectly)

I was hoping it would be a 2 door G63 with the V8 like the Defender with a similar set up. Since its going to be an EV, I wont have any interest and will stick to the normal ICE version for a very long time.

It’s confirmed to be an EV, and will possibly be EV only. The only platform which will support both EV and ICE aside from the G’s latter-frame chassis is the MMA which is designed for the compact CLA/GLA/GLB-Class.

I think it will be on MMA platform.

And it will exist alongside the new GLB/EQB?

I hope they don’t overdo it and dilute the G’s brand. I think one of the things that makes the G wagen so dreamy is it’s exclusivity, I don’t think a lot of G550 and G63 owners are gonna be happy if a bunch of mini versions of their car are popping up all over the place. I know SL owners felt diluted at the introduction of the SLK.

Ola already approved the 4-cylinder G350 for China. He did make the G550 and G63 owners unhappy there but G350 had been selling well.

I guess the dilution of the G-wagon brand is inevitable.

I think the G350 makes sense for China for their different emissions taxes but it should stop there. I really hope they limit the amount of mini Gs they make in order to keep it exclusive. A mass produced version will kill its image.

Disgusting imo. U see it with the Bronco sport & made the Hummer a disgrace with H2 & H3.
Just need G, Bronco, & Hummer. No knock offs. But it's the almighty $ they seek.

What make this worse IMO is the fact that Ola’s goal is to take MB upmarket. Less lower end models, limited inventory, higher price points etc. He’s all about making the brand more exclusive and bringing it back to the status symbol it was in 60s/70s/80s and then goes and does this. Absolute bone headed move. It might boost profits in the short term but it will ruin the G’s image in the long run if they get greedy with it. In the same way the R107 SL was the status symbol back in the day, the G wagen is now filling its shoes, they better not make a mockery of it.

Hmmm, they can't be making a Jimny competitor right?

and... is the size of this G-wagen is going to be more like a GLB?

Interesting--didn't expect it to be an EV. Lots of potential changes to our G in the coming years.

Maybe a convertible, so it doesn't have to directly compete with the GLB

Give me a long wheelbase Defender 130 sized G instead. Ideally with a V12.

This is part of the reason why I jumped at the opportunity to spec a new 2024 and hopefully hold her for awhile... don't fix what's not broken!

G wagon to me is like the 911, full of legacy heritage and a passionate owner's group. Porsche is very careful with positioning and marketing of the 911, I hope Benz is the same way... Careful diluting that...

Bring on the Electric G first! My dealer told me that he got word from Germany that it is on hold, hopefully not because of the Baby G! I think he is full of ****.

If they make a 2 door convertible version like they did a couple decades ago that would be pretty cool. But I have a feeling this will be more along the lines of the GLB. They should name it something like GLG so it doesn’t take too much away from the G class name.
