Angry 2021 G63 Check Engine Light

Brought in my truck to the dealer as the check engine light was staying on despite the truck driving normal. This was on Tuesday morning of this week. Didn't really hear anything for 3 days so I contacted the dealer to see what the issue is and today they told me that they had to order a control module to fix the check engine light. They said it needs to be replaced. Has anyone had any experience with this? Apparently I won't have my truck back for a week to a week and a half in total, since I dropped it off on 2/6. The earliest the part should be at the dealer's is 2/13 or 2/14 and I don't know how long it takes to replace once the part arrives. Annoying!

Is it drivable? Why not just pick your vehicle up while waiting for the part to come in? G wagon parts are notoriously slow to get.

totally drivable, didn’t notice anything unusual and figured it was just some software issue and I’d have it back within a day 🤦🏻‍♂️

Control module ???? Umm, would need a little more information on exactly what module to give you any actual information.

This sort of thing isnt all that uncommon, and thats for any car, not just MB, and not just G63. Sensors break, or have issues, or settings, or need to be recalibrated.

But so you know, asking if we've experienced a control module replacement and how long it should take is equivalent to asking your family how long surgery would take your doctor mentioned. "surgery for what?"..... " you know SURGERY! so I can get healed" .... "well we didnt even know you were sick, or what your symptoms are, or what the issue is, what is being operated on?" LOL Kinda need more to offer any information.

To carry your analogy a bit farther, the surgeon's skill and experience factors in also. Driving into a service department with a lit CEL is not going to be remedied by the same guy who changed your oil and wipers. The guys operating the SDS need training, experience and intuition. Too often, they just guess and try changing out black boxes or installing software updates hoping for a miracle.

Lol sorry guys I was just repeating what my service advisor texted me. I literally know NOTHING about automotive repair and don't want to know! Hopefully I get my truck back asap this week!

Understood, and just bustin' your *****, no worries, I understand not everyone is maybe as mechanically inclined as others, which its A Ok...... anyway, the service advisor should be providing you a lot more detailed information about the issue, what caused the CEL besides "control module", that could be thousands of different things. So without further intel, it will be hard to have any idea whats going on.

But with that said, random check engine lights aren't uncommon for any car, and usually aren't something that should cause a big concern as long as its not something where the car is put into limp mode, or car wont start etc. It's likely something minor like a sensor needing to be replaced, or calibrated. And 7-10 days isn't out of the norm especially if its an uncommon sensor and they need to order it or its on back order etc.

Now if it's a CEL and dumping blue smoke out of the back, and wont go above 3000 RPM, may have a bigger issue on your hands. But the fact that it's 100% drivable would usually indicate it's a minor sensor, or minor item having to do with the ECU data etc.

No matter what your automotive skill levels are, no car owner should be without an OBDII scanner. $250 will buy a scanner that can provide you the fault codes that triggered the CEL, and provide you an opportunity to clear the codes if you're able to remedy the problem. I run diagnostic scans once a month as there are many faults that don't trigger the CEL, just to be sure some major problem isn't hatching.

I had a check engine light on a 2021 G63 back in January. They had it in the shop 4 days.

1. The coolant thermostat had to be replaced.
2. Had to replace the air filter for activated charcoal canister.

I just asked my service advisor about that and to explain it to me so I will update this thread once I receive my answer.

*Update* received the answer from my service advisor:

Good morning. No worries. The only part refurbished is the casing of the control unit /shell the rest is new.

Check engine light just came on again this past Saturday. I've been driving the truck since then and it drives fine with no issues. I don't know what the problem is. I just went through this scenario 2 months ago and now the same thing again. Bringing my truck into the dealer tomorrow morning. Last time this happened I didn't have my truck for 2 weeks Hopefully whatever the issue is this time doesn't take as long to fix!!!! Truck is still under the 4 year/50k mile manufacturer warranty.

Highly recommend the Launch Elite 2.0 Benz OBD scanner that goes for about $160 on Amazon. It's always nice to have some idea about what the dealer is going to slam you with.

No they are not - I have had no issues waiting for parts in 4.5 years of owning my 2019.

Picking up my truck from my dealer tomorrow morning, all it needed was programing for the emissions thankfully!

Seems strange that suddenly software determined emissions were out of compliance. Do you live in a metro area where you have to have your vehicle emissions checked annually?

Nope, I live in Miami. And after I picked up the truck from the dealer on Saturday the check engine light came back on a little bit later the same day!!!! I'll need to bring it back to the dealer again on Monday. This will be my 3rd time bringing it in for this issue since February 2024! Ridiculous.

Now the dealer says they are going to be replacing the thermostat and that they should have my car ready to be picked up on Friday (in 2 days). Hopefully this solves the check engine light issue this time!!!!

My 2022 had an issue with the thermostat and it threw a CEL code. Hopefully that’s all it is now!
