UPDATED WITH DIY-Anyone have interest in DIY video swapping G63 exhaust on a 550?
My new exhaust is at the paint shop right now getting blacked out. Should be ready this week. I am happy to film the process, if it would help anyone else out...??
If not, that is cool too, prolly save me some time if nobody is interested.
Anyway, we need more DIY content on here, I thought it would be a good start.
happy motoring.

Unfortunately, there won’t be a video, I apologize for over promising....I forgot I had an appointment today so was in a hurry to get it done...
I will put together a write-up this sometime this weekend. Overall it was a very easy job...the second side took about 20 minutes. The first side probably took me an hour, as I was taking my time to not mess anything up.

Yes, I have (and want to).
The issue I am having is that I don’t want to just have vinyl on it, as I love on the N. Dakota/Canada border and it gets cold as heck here, so I don’t think it would stick.
The shop that cerakoted the exhaust said that he would paint the running board. Looking it up on here it looks like it is nearly impossible to get the rubber strips that are in the steps, back into the channels.
IIRC, I read a post on here and it took 3-4hrs to get the rubber in the channels....I don’t wanna pay a shop for that, nor do I want to mess with it. So, that is where I am at right now.
But yes, I definitely want to get rid of the chrome.

DIY Walkthrough G63 Exhaust on G550
Tools Needed: E-12 socket, ratchet, 13mm wrench, flathead screwdriver, and something to put under the mufflers to hold them as you take it off.
*I have the AMG sports exhaust. If you don’t have it you won’t have the wiring harness on your car (I don’t believe anyway). I would just leave the dust cap plug in the muffler wiring port, but I believe everything else should be identical.
Parts Needed:
4 rubber bushings: 901-492-00-44
Mounting Brackets: 463-490-05-02 & 463-490-06-02
G63 Mufflers: 463-490-77-01 & 463-490-76-01
1). Once you have something underneath the muffler, using the E-12 remove the bolt holding the V-band, it is located after (what I belief is a resonator) just before the muffler. Completely remove the bolt. Use a screw driver or your large muscle to pull the band apart and remove it completely.
2). Pull on the muffler to remove the connection and rest the muffler on your previously placed object.
3). Remove the 2 13mm screws from the bracket near the tailpipes. Holding the muffler on your hand for support, slowly lower it being careful not to put stress on the wiring harness that clips into the exhaust.
4). Once you have lowered the muffler down enough to provide enough clearance to turn the muffler, rotate the top of the muffler to the outside of the vehicle. This will allow you easy access to remove the wiring harness.
5). Using a small flathead screw driver, pry up on the outside end of the harness and pull, disconnecting the harness from the muffler.
6). Mount your new bracket into the same slots that the factory bracket was mounted to by tightening down the 2 13mm screws.
7). Cut/discard the small zip tie that is holding the wiring harness to the vehicle. This will provide added length to the wiring harness.
8). Attach the rubber bushings to the bracket you just installed.
9). Slide the muffler rods into the rubber bushings. The tailpipes should now be supported by your new bracket.
10). Clamp the v-band around the resonator and muffler and tighten, do not over tighten.
11). Plug the wiring harness into the muffler and enjoy your new setup.
Some other photos:
Hope this helps someone. If you can change a tire you can do this job.

It is louder, but nothing extreme. I would believe that the mufflers could be the same, other than the side exit tailpipes, but that is just a guess.
I am thinking it is louder just because the exhaust exits out the side rather than down underneath the vehicle.
Even though I would rather not have the side pipes when off-roading, it definitely looks a lot cooler.

I did the same swap last year and it is louder for sure, especially when you step on it, and I had the G550 "Sport" exhaust that comes with the AMG Line option package that comes on the G550.

I'm curious, what made you guys decide to go with an OEM AMG exhaust rather than an aftermarket exhaust then?
Do you think the OEM AMG exhaust sounds comparably good to an aftermarket solution?
Was it because of the lower cost? If cost was a main factor have you considered a Chinese copy?
Brabus replica goes for $800 for instance https://www.alibaba.com/product-deta...42f23b94I8NYrQ
Cheers

I just ordered a Porsche Spyder and am getting Soul exhaust components and the tips are getting ceramic coated, which withstand the heat better. However, I had the G tips powder coated and they still look fine albeit they are further down the line and do not get as hot as others. Jet-Hot is a great place to use for ceramic coating; however, sending them a big piece could get expensive!

1). I received some other quotes, although they were for more items than just mufflers, but came in at a cost which almost negated the savings of buy a G550 vs a G63.
2). I like using OEM if it accomplishes what I am looking to do.
3). Originally looking at increased sound, as the side pipes weren’t that important to me. Although, I have seen the Chinese eBay side pipes for sale. No, I didn’t look at other clones like the Brabus that you linked. I am not against something like that, just knew dealing with OEM would likely be an easier process and higher quality materials.
(I am guessing powdercoating would be fine as I don’t think anyone here is tracking their Gs. However, I didn’t want to deal with having to go back to get re-painted.)

Anyone know how to post a video on here? Do I need to post it first on YouTube? Or is there a way to post it locally on the forum?

Your work looks factory. Can't wait to see the video. (: I am not sure on the best way to do the video. I usually did it to the Tube then provided a link.
