2021 G63 with 285/45R22?

Hi all

i just ordered a G63, but chose to get 20" wheels in my order with winter boots on them.i don't expect the car to be here until this fall, so that makes the most sense to me. This also gives me some time to choose summer wheels and tyres. I like the look of 22 inch wheels, but I want to retain some comfort. I also like the higher sidewall and diameter that fills out the wheel well.

Now please before everyone tears into me, telling me to use the search function or Google, I have done both, at length. The issue is that a lot of the info seems a bit inconsistent and so on. So I would be very grateful for any concise info anyone have. The tyres I was thinking of using is the Michelin Pilot Sport 4 SUV.

Thanks all. Much appreciated.

I've spent way too many hours researching tires also, and it seems every tire has mixed reviews - even the Nitto TG's that everyone on this forum raves about. I have no experience with Michelin's Pilot series, but I have run Michelin LTX Defenders and another series whose name I don't recall just now (both on full size SUV's). Both were great tires - good comfort, treadwear and traction. I would have installed Michelin A/T's on my G, but wanted a year-round tire with the "3PMSF" snow traction rating, and went with Yokohama Geolandars. Falken Wildpeak was my second choice - its tread is a bit more chunky. I plan to mount Wildpeaks on my Rubicon at the end of summer. Michelin makes top quality tires that deliver what they tout, and if Pilots sound right for your needs, you shouldn't be disappointed.

Hi there

Thank you for your reply.

I have a lot of experience with the other tyres in the Pilot series. MPSS, MPS4S and MPC2 are all tyres I have, and I have yet to find them anything but absolutely brilliant. So by that deduction I think it's worth trying the MPS4 SUV for the G. Here in Europe we cannot really get Nitto any more, so that's a no-go on all accounts. But I'm not looking for a tyre with any kind of offroad capabilities. I got the G because 1. I think it is a fun car with some personality, and two I wanted something with four doors. I have the Levante on loan to test, but I'm just not sold on it. Too intense all the time, and I have enough of that in the garage already. I always wanted a G just for the fun of it, and I did some testing of it in Germany when it debuted, including taking it for a few laps on the Nordschleife lol.

Anyhow, what I'm actually looking for in terms of advice was more the fitment on the car. I know they fit the stock 22" wheels, but was curious to hear if it anyone know if they will be 100% rub-free on the G63 with stock suspension.

Thanks again

There's a great visual/dimensional tire comparison calculator at https://www.rimsntires.com/specspro.jsp. It takes into account all the tire parameters and wheel offset dimensions so that you can see how the new size compares with the old. With this, you can measure the clearance on your current set and see if the new set fits within the available space. Like you, I bought my G as a fun vehicle, and here in Colorado, the G is very much in its element.

I have the stock Pirellis on 22" wheels and the ride is great, much better than I thought it would be although it may have something to do with the adaptive suspension. And I have the fronts at 40psi and rears at 42psi.

Thank you for the reply. When your wheels are turned to full lock, what kind of space is there between the corner of the tyre and the fender liner?

Thank you for the link, a nice little tool. Interesting to see the size difference that way.

No idea, and I cannot measure since my wife has it and she is out of town for a few days. But they are the stock wheels/tires off a G63 so I know there is clearance.

My dealership said to run 38 psi front and 35 psi rear on my stock 22 inch tires.

Check your door tag since it will give you an idea of what they should be. I reached out to the plant last year since I wanted to know why the rear should be higher and this is some of the response I received:Dear Mr. Ziolkowski,

Dear Mr. Ziolkowski,

Thank you for your email from 8th October 2020.

You want to know what the weight distribution is of your Mercedes-Benz G 550 and which is the percentage of vehicle weight over each axle.

According to the documentation available to us is the axle load distribution:

Front axle axle 1 corresponds to 1.550 kg
Rear axle Axle 2 1.900 kg

My colleagues and I will be happy to answer any further questions you may have.

Best regards

I’ll go out and check the door tag and the tag on the fuel door. My dealership service manager said higher psi in the front tires.
Thanks!

Regardless, stick with what you like best. I find that my settings work well on the roads we frequent and even on the beach the other day - what a blast!

Fuel door says, 38 front, 35 rear
Door jam says 38 front, 49 rear
The service manager said something about towing or having a lot of weight in the rear.

Confusing to say the least! On my 911 with a rear engine, the rear tires are higher, and I would have thought in the G there was more weight up front but that is not what the plant said.

Yeah, I don’t know why the door jam is different than the fuel door. My GT3 is 29 psi front, 33 psi rear.

Yes. Light versus normal usage. It’s basically just me so I run 39 in front and 37 in the rear.

Same here, Kyle the service manager told me to run 38 front, 35 rear. It’s confusing that the fuel door is different than the door jam. That’s why I asked the service manager. They never set the pressures right at the dealership.

So getting back to the original question a bit. Does anyone know if 285/45R22 will fit the G63 on stock wheels?

I would think that it would, I ran 285/40/22 winter tires.

Hi. I have a 2020 G 63 with the 22 inch wheels and the OEM Pirelli Scorpion Zero tires 295/40 22 (summer performance tires). I decided to replace the OEM tires with winter tires. Nobody makes 295/40 22 snow tires, so my Mercedes dealer (and their preferred tire shop) recommended 285/45 22 tires. These tires are 0.4" narrower and 0.8" taller than the OEM tires, but my dealer and their preferred tire shop said the slight difference in size would not cause any problems. I've only had these tires on for a couple of weeks, but everything seems fine. They also look good.

Just to make it easy on you i have already made similar search before receiving my G63.

I would advise to go with the 20inch wheels only if you got the trail package otherwise go with the 21inch if you like or with the mass majority 22inch wheels.

All G63 and G500 are pirelli tyres as manufacture selection but base don my experience i prefer Michelin in general. So far the pirelli is good but once it come for a change i will check with michelin if its available i will move to michelin.

21" wheels have a dismally small selection of tires available, so stick with 20" or 22". I retrofitted 20" wheels on my Lexus entirely for this reason (the "optional" 21" wheels were "standard").
