G63 differential service

I just hit 1,900 miles. I called the service manager to setup the rear diff service and he said my 2021 G63 trans and engine models or build don't require the differential service. Is that accurate? i don't understand. Thanks!

I read that they changed it for 2019 on. I hope that’s the case because I’m at 2300 miles and haven’t had anything done.

From one MB dealer's website:

2,000 Miles — Fluid Services on AMG® Models

Most Mercedes-Benz vehicles don’t require major maintenance until they hit 10,000 miles. However, AMG® Models should get service at just 2,000 miles. This is a quick check-up and includes a replacement of rear axle differential fluid on C-Class, CLA-Class, E-Class, and SL-Class models. If you have a G-Class model, you’ll need a front and rear axle oil change.

Services are different for AMG® Mercedes-Benz vehicles because these were originally a sub-brand of Mercedes. Wholly owned by the carmaker since 2007, AMG® vehicles still represent a model that goes above and beyond the standard Mercedes, particularly when it comes to speed. That enhanced performance changes many of the vehicle’s maintenance needs, so it’s important to understand the unique demands of an AMG® model.

AND....

30,000 Miles — A Major Milestone for AMG®

For most Mercedes-Benz vehicles, the 30,000 mile inspection is nearly identical to the 10,000 mile visit. For an AMG® vehicle, however, this is the first major service visit. At 30,000 miles, AMG® models receive:
  • Rear axle oil change
  • Engine air filter replacement
  • Transmission oil and filter replacement
  • V12 AMG® coolant service
This also marks the first transmission oil and filter replacement for CLA and GLA AMG® models.

I'm confused. based on the info Streborx provided does that mean the 2k rear diff service is needed or not?

I only know as much as what was posted on the dealer's website. If your dealer isn't selling and servicing many AMGs, he might not know what the maintenance schedule is. Call a dealer somewhere in the sunbelt (likely selling many AMGs and G63s) and inquire there.

Here's the thread I was referring to above:
https://mbworld.org/forums/g-class-w...ocedure-2.html

My guess is that dealer website is using 2018 and prior info.

I called three dealers - the closest one told me to look in the manual and follow it. I did and the manual doesn't say anything about differential fluid change. A little disappointing since I was thinking of servicing my car there. Maybe not any more since they seem clueless.

I then was able to speak to the other local dealer and the dealer I purchased it from, and in both instances was able to speak to someone in the service department who spent some time looking at the maintenance spec sheet and the first entry was the A service at 10k miles. The front and rear axle/differential fluids don't need to be changed until 50k miles.

Although I can't find it in writing, I'm not going to worry about the 2k change as it does not seem to apply to the 2019+ G Class.

Thanks. I spoke with MBUSA and a product specialist confirmed the diff service isn't required. It's frustrating considering the finance manager sold me on the 4 yr prepaid maintenance plan because it included the 1,900 miles rear diff service. I could have purchased the 3 year which didn't include the service considering its not needed.

MBUSA does a ****-poor job providing owner documentation. Apparently their attitude is why bother publishing anything that might be useful, but that most owners will never read. The "maintenance manual" I received with my G is nothing but a booklet filled with identical pages of check-off boxes for every service interval, with no indication of which services are required at which intervals. The last maintenance manual for the G that specifies services required at each mileage interval was for MY2016 (as far as I've been able to find), and this has limited value to current model years. I guess this vagueness lets the dealer service departments make it up day to day. The owners manual for my G has so many errors, it's essentially worthless. It's mostly a compendium of repetitious cautions and warnings informing the owner not to slam his fingers in a door when closing it and not to be distracted by checking the oil level while driving despite that checking the oil level while driving is the only way to check the oil level since the geniuses in Stuttgart decided dipsticks are obsolete technology.

If you are good with somebody at the dealer they probably can provide a copy of the maintenance intervals. I remember they said differential fluid change every 50k miles. I think spark plugs and transfer case at 80k. I imagine both services will be expensive.

I’m on 15k+ miles now, when I asked for differential service at 2k miles I was told it’s not required but mine 20k/2 years is coming up in about 6 weeks and it lists differentials service for the first time. I have 2019 g63

Thus the reason to find a good Indy shop! Luckily I have a MB-only shop near me, which I have already used for non-warranty items....way better than any dealer.

Yes I have an Indy shop in town but I am undecided on where to go for service. I can’t imagine many W463a’s have gone through their shop, but I only have 2300 miles right now.

Also may end up trading for a 2022 depending on a price increase and any updates. A dealer nearby has a 2020 G550 with non diamond stitched interior and 8000 miles listed for $174k haha. These things are keeping value.

Perhaps the forum administrator would consider adding a section for a directory of indy MB shops. Many members are distant from dealerships and would appreciate referrals to competent and trustworthy mechanics.
