2021 G63 Rear Differential Leaking

So, today I decided to just take a look underneath to see if anything interesting was going on under there and spotted this. Has anybody else had this issue? Any input appreciated.

No, mine has 1828 miles on it and it’s not leaking. Have you seen any evidence of it leaking on your garage floor?

I'll check tomorrow under the car. I assume you mean that portion that you ran your finger along on the circular part?

If there's nothing on the garage floor I wouldn't be as concerned. I had my rear diff leak on my RR Sport and it stained the garage floor brown.

That looks like damage from the road, there is a dent also near the bottom side of the differential. Has anyone taken your car off-road? maybe during shipping? definitely looks damaged

Yes, that would be helpful. It seems as if the leak is old, since there is no fresh oil.

Wow, I completely missed that. I see what you are talking about. I bought it with 12 miltes on it. It's never been off road. Only other people to drive it are the porters from the dealership.

Does not make it to the floor and appears to possibly not be a currentl leak.

This place is a joke.
There is no leak there. Only scraped undercoating and a gash on the bottom where something impacted it.

I just remembered that one day as I was driving on the highway, something hit the underside of the car, like a rock or something. That's probably the gash. And it does look like undercoating in the video, but it was soft and greasy to the touch.

You can see the undercoating bubbling on the diff where the hot fluid is in contact with the assembly, thus melting the undercoating and making it soft.

thats not an oil leak... its a sprayed on undercoating to prevent corrosion on the diff and other steel parts. i'll take a pic of my 550 when i get a chance... its got the same coating.

Agreed, that is the undercoating spray that is all over under the car.

In your case it is very apparent due to the bubbling, but if you start wiping your figure on other items under the car, you will find that “grease” everywhere.

Only on G-wagons! Maybe MB actually thinks they will go off-road one day instead of just to the local mall.

I understand that this is surprising for you in the US. Because most of American cars do not have any anti-rust coating
But this is G wagon, it should last for ages.

If your G has to go on a lift, demand the dealer uses the special fixture to secure it to the lift. They didn’t with mine, and it slipped because of the soft cosmoline coating, with my car almost falling off the lift.

The special fixture does not fit all lifts, so your dealer may not be able to use it.

they had it, they just chose not to use it. That changed when the car shifted and everyone involved needed a change of underwear.

This is nothing new, G wagons have been falling off lifts since 2002. They are quite awful cars to work on.

It's not cosmoline, it's a specific underbody wax used on the G's to prevent corrosion. It specifically says if you do a repair, you need to re-coat anything you disturbed the coating on.
