Chip Tuning
Does anyone here have any experience with Race Chip, or other chip tuners? I had a COBB accessport on my Porsche that did wonders in a similar fashion, although that was just an ECM flash. My understanding is the RaceChip actively modifies inputs from turbo and pressure sensors, so a bit different.
120 hp, 160 lb-ft, and 20% fuel efficiency all sound great for my 550...basically taking it up close to a G63 for about 40k less, lol

I was worried about the damage aspect too, but if MB can tune the same engine to a G63, seems like it should be fine. Might result in additional wear on the other parts in the drivetrain that aren't performance spec of the G63, if that is even a thing.

Interesting... what about this?

More expensive, but seems easier thru ODBII.

I have the Renntech tune...had it on my 2017 G63 and now on my 2020 G550. Install is easy - can reverse back to stock. Plus if you ask them, they can take out the Eco thing as well.

[QUOTE=deediegraphiti;8504825]Have you noticed an improvement to fuel economy, or just hp and torque?[/QUO
I'm not really sure on the MPG....I've never paid that much attention to it, but the next time I fill up I'll can let you know what it is!!!

We are a factory-authorized RENNTECH center and have installed many many HHT tunes. The unit can put the ECU back to stock in about 90 seconds and may be done in the parking lot. Renntech is the only tune I would recommend for the M177 powerplant (and we're dealers for several other tuning brands).

I'll second @motorwerksgroup recommendation for Renntech. I've run them on several G Wagons (G63 and G65), GT63S, and S63. They have the formula down for safe power on the MB platform. It's not the cheapest option, but some MB dealers even sell their stuff, so that speaks volumes on the reliability. I have seen one issue of a stubborn CEL on a C63S, but it's hard to say if the HHT actually caused it, or if there is just something funny about that particular C63S. Renntech graciously accepted the HHT back and gave a refund. Pretty stand up service in my opinion.
As for the result of the tunes...impressive to say the least. The G65 we had with the Renntech tune was absurd in it's power delivery. It felt like getting kicked is the pants by a mule when the turbos lit. The GT63S was already stupid fast, but the Renntech makes it so you laugh like an idiot when you mash the go pedal. We are still babying the engine on the '21 G63, so can't really give a full report yet, but I have no doubt it will be similarly impressive.

same here…Renntech on my 2020 550. Easy to do/undo. Can really feel the difference. Also got their exhaust controller module which really increases the rumble in full open. Very happy with both

hi
had RaceChip on my G550 , actually it makes a difference with stock ! main problem was that the power increase they advert kicks in on high rpm ... around 5000 or so. but u really feel de difference with your butt.
the racechip is not easely removable before service ... due the wiring . Also if u manipulate or upgrade the ECU .... dealer sees that too ... so bye bye warranty!
so i decidet to go full beast 800 hp .... new turbos , pipes etc!
if somebody is intrested i can sell my racechip for half the price!

Any of these performance upgrades are detectable by the dealer, it just depends if they care enough to take notice. Whether it affects your warranty if an issue comes up depends on the dealer's interpretation.
I didn't run anything on the G but if I did I would only consider Renntech.
The only reason I didn't do it was I knew I wasn't keeping my vehicle long-term and for each new G you have to buy a new license so it gets pretty expensive.

Does the Renntech HHT actually makes a backup of the stock tune file before it loads the tuned file? All of the other tunes that I have used from other tuners required me to send them a copy of my stock file so that they can use it to tune. Doesn't seem like Renntech request that you send them your stock file first. Kind of makes me nervous if they don't backup your stock file in case anything goes wrong.

and you what that rentech does not leave a flag? are you going to flash the ECU back to stock every time u go to service? its like 3 x in a year? or maybe more? as the car is new and under warranty there always something to complain about

I was under the impression that modern ECUs will track if the have been flashed and if so how many times.
That said, you technically only void the warranty on the specific items your tune affects. Typically that includes the engine block itself, turbos, transmission, maybe fuel pump, and some other stuff like that.
Also depends on your relationship with your dealer as to whether they will honor your warranty on those items in the event that they fail in the presence of an aftermarket tune.
They cannot blanket void your entire auto warranty due to a chip tune.
