Value of g wagons declining ?

Hi all, I’m the owner of a 2021 g63. My car is fully loaded and has less than 2000km’s on it. It’s Arabian grey with 22” wheels premium everything, night package including custom factory black lettering around the vehicle. I was told by my dealership that I’d barely break even in a trade in. Is this accurate ? If that’s so, that means the price of G’s aren’t retaining as much as I thought they would.

2021 Mercedes-Benz G-Class G AMG 63 4MATIC AWD - $233,335 - CarGurus

I know you are not in the US (by the use of KM) - but here is an example of a 2021 G63 for sale next to me - 4200 miles - fully optioned - 233k - but I know they would take 220k right now. I am not sure what they are offering you - but to drive a car like ours for a year for essentially free, is still a pretty good deal if you ask me.

$68,685 over MSRP for a used one. That's more than we're asking for the 3 new ones we have!

The reason I bought my car isn’t because I wanted it to appreciate i bought it to break even at trade, however if this new economy is on the decline, and that there is no demand for G’s here or overseas, that would mean the prices of our cars are going to go down. So I’m investigating if that’s the case or if I’m being jerked around. I’m in Canada, so I’ll talk CAD, g63’s under 2000km were going for about 295-330 resale. Now it doesn’t seem to be the case

Anecdotal, but...

I was in a showroom today looking at a Charger Hellcat Widebody. Window sticker was $92k. Before I asked one question, the sales guy halfway across the showroom said, "It's down to $89k now!"

I think sales momentum is slowing. Prices are stabilizing, with possible softening.

Did you pay MSRP? If so, I assume you paid around $180 for it so you're still in the money. You should be able to get 20k over MSRP fairly easily based on the US numbers I'm seeing on places like Manheim.

The peak of the market was right when they announced the cancellation of the 2022 model year. They were going wholesale 75-95K over sticker even with 10K miles. More recently a local dealer had one and the salesman told me they bought it close to MSRP and struggled to find a buyer. He said they ended up making about $1K on it after sitting on it a few weeks.

I would think around 200k on trade in would be about right.

Gas in my town also dropped 40 cents in one day.

Not anecdotal - sales have decelerated.

Industry forecasts call for improving supply chain/chip situation, this puts further pressure on used car prices. Improved supply of new cars in an overall softening environment means the pendulum is swinging in favor of the consumer in the used car market.

"Break even" -- does this mean getting MSRP + whatever ADM you paid? The problem now is that there are '22 G63s sitting on dealer lots priced at $300K and no line of bidders out the door and around the corner.

2026 G63
Saw in another forum that a buyer backed out of a white/red G63 with MSRP $198k. Dealer wanted $50k ADM.

Seems like prices are softening but not like Dairy Queen soft serve just yet.

The way I look at it now, if you have a 2021 and didn't sell at the peak around January/February, then just keep it and enjoy it now because you won't get anything like you could have a few months ago.

You could also wait until September when the Luxury Tax kicks in on new and used cars from the dealership...might be able to sell for a bit more. Purely speculative...

The U.S. tried this luxury tax gambit back in 1991 to punish people who had the audacity to work hard and become wealthy. Instead of paying the taxes on luxury goods purchases, the wealthy folks just held onto their money. All the car, boat, airplane, etc. factories scaled back or shut down, idling thousands of factory workers who then collected unemployment. The government bureaucrats, not famous for acting quickly, took only 2 years to realize Karl hadn't thought things through sufficiently, and repealed this tax folly. Wealthy folks might be scorned, but they own the marbles.

This is what I was thinking while reading this. Does op think getting back adm is a thing, well it’s not, not for a normal economic market. It’s effectively a luxury tax. Expect all new cars to depreciate. Sounds like op thought he made an investment, vs buying a car to drive. Op, sell right now cause that’s the answer you are looking for. Someone who loves gwagons will buy it. Investments are time dependent. A love of cars is lifelong.

There was an article in the past few days (Google it) that Canadian house prices are dropping. Sell that G-Wagen asap if you are not committed to long term ownership.

Boats, RVs and unreliable German niche vehicle values could start dropping like a stone.

Location dependent. Yes, 50-60 mins away from downtown core, is seeing a noticeable drop in sales and volume.

Also, from what I've seen, Canadian dealers are selling used 2021 G63s left and right for around $305k-$320k CAD.

This month's Carfax report estimates my '19 G550's (15K miles) trade value at $128K, about $9K off its MSRP. IF I intended to sell or trade it, I think this is a reasonable number in the current market, unless it was going to a MB dealer in exchange for a '22 G, and who wanted a $50K - $100K ADM on the new G.

23's are being allocated. However, not every dealer has received an allocation.

Canada data point. 2019, 21k kms. Bought at circa $30k south of list.

When you add the luxury tax, these cars new are worth barely over list now.
