Trailer Brake Pre—Wiring

I have a 21 G550, rated to tow 7k lbs.

Just read through the entire owners manual and I can’t find nothing on pre-wiring or wiring for a brake controller, no mention at all.

How do they expect us to tow anywhere near the stated limit without brakes… 🤦🏼‍♂️

Anyway, I bought a side by side and picking up a 14” dual axle trailer. Anyone have any insight as to how to utilize the G’s towing capacity and the trailer brakes?

There's an informative tutorial on brake controllers at https://www.etrailer.com/faq-brakecontroller.aspx. Generally, a trailer whose gross weight is less than 3,000 lbs. doesn't require a braking system. Trailers rated above 3,000 lbs have brake systems already installed, and you must configure your vehicle accordingly. Towing large loads that are as much or more than the tow vehicle weight requires exceptional care, and it's worth spending as much time as you can gathering information to ensure safe travel.

Thanks for the link, some good info there.

My point is that G wagon is rated to tow a 7k trailer, but aren’t even pre-wired for a trailer brake so you need to have all the wiring run or try using a Bluetooth controller.

Just seems odd & frustrating, “towing capacity of 7,000lbs but if you want to tow more than 3k, you have to run all the wires yourself, as we didn’t want to bother with it; please enjoy your 160k vehicle.”

Above are the labels from the towing hitch and the adjacent electric socket on my 2021 and 2022 G63.. There is clearly an a “electric brakes” wire in that socket

If your SxS is less than 2000 lbs., you could use a single axle aluminum frame trailer and avoid the entire brake system problem.

That is great news, there was nothing in the manually at all.

So it must just be pre-wired and capped off somewhere, hopefully behind the dash, as there doesn’t appear to be any settings available in the multimedia system.

I saw in the previous W463 the wiring ran from the wiring harness to the trunk and stopped there. You had buy the wiring and have it installed or mess with it yourself, to get the wiring to the external brake controller of your choice.

If they set the W463A up like the 463, I am leaning towards this.

Does anyone know if there is a pre-wired trailer brake pig tail wire connection located somewhere.? Preferable under the dash. I wired a Redarc trailer brake controller in my Porsche Macan and once I found the pre-wired connection under the dash the hook up was simple.
I'm hoping I can do the same in my 2020 G63

Is there a reason you can't use the trailer brake connection on the 7-pin connector, or does your G not have the factory installed towing package?

Yes, I would use the installed 7 pin connector. But I am assuming I need to add an electric trailer brake controller (Redarc, Tekonsha etc.) I won't have the vehicle until Wednesday so I can't check but I don't believe it comes with a factory installed controller. Accessory list shows (Code Q59 Trailer Hitch Preliminary Setup). I'm assuming that just means it's pre-wired to add a controller)

Sorry -- I misunderstood your inquiry.. The 7-pin connector on my '19 G550 has a 7-conductor cable exiting it, but I don't know if the brake wire terminates under the driver's side dash with a pre-installed connector for a brake controller. The OE tow package does not include a controller, but hopefully there's a connector already installed for one.

Thanks streborx, Maybe someone else will chime in with the answer. Hopefully it's under there and not too hard to find. There is a terminal under the dash on my Macan but REALLY hard to find. I crawled all around under there and couldn't find it. Finally went to my dealer and one of the techs found it after searching for quite a while.

Does anyone know where the pigtail is located on a 2019+ G63 to plug in an electric brake controller? I’ve seen on the previous generation that it is located in the rear of the vehicle. Really don’t understand that location. On so many other Mercedes models it is located under the dash above the break pedal. Before I start tearing up my new vehicle I’d really like to know where to start.

Unless you've already found it, with the factory trailer hitch package on my '16 GLE 350 and '19 GLS 450 it was behind the brake pedal under or at the edge of the trim along the carpet. It's likely tucked in or cloth-wrapped to the wire bundle when not used. Mine was a green connector approx. 3/4" square.

There is a picture at https://mbworld.org/forums/gle-class...ml#post8446448 on a topic I started called Camper towing with my GLE 350.

7 pin trailer plug

Good morning,
I'll be towing a small travel trailer behind my '17 350. It came with the factory mounted hitch and four pin connecter. It works great with my trailer with surge brakes However, the travel trailer has a 7pin plug . I have the hitch and controller figured out but can't find information on the 7 pin plug that is required.
Is there any info available?
Thanks,

Try https://www.trailerpartsdepot.com/sh...ters-plugs-377 to see if they have a ready-made adapter. If not, they can probably provide you wiring information so that you can improvise an interface.

I would not want to tow 7k lbs with only 560lbs of tongue weight. That's about 4k lbs of towing weight for me. And I have a little experience with towing.

I don't know if this is related but it might help someone searching for something similar. Tucked above the trim of OBD2 port, you might find a green female 4 wire plug for plug and play brake controller. Here's a pic of mine on the GLE 167:
