Power loss issue

Hello,

I have done a bit of searching and I have found a decent amount of information related to the fuel pump recall but my issue does not seem to be related. Here is the scenario:

Taking off from a stop, I will get intermittent/minor wheel “hop” under light acceleration and the vehicle will cut power. A few seconds later power will return.

This issue has been happening for months and there are no dash lights or codes being thrown. I have attempted to disable ESP but the issue remains.

Of course the issue is intermittent enough that several trips to the dealer have resulted in them throwing their hands in the air because they can not reproduce the issue.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Odd, make sure you're fully turning off ESP. I haven't messed with it in mine, but I know in most MB vehicles hitting the ESP button once will simply put it into ESP-Sport where there will still be intervention from the system if it detects wheel spin. Usually, in order to turn it FULLY off, you would need to hold down the ESP button for 5-10 seconds until it lights up on the dash the ESP logo with "off" displayed.

Could also be a bit of turbo lag, or bogging down, or could also be the wheel still spinning, which feels like power loss, but until it catches it feels like its cutting out. Tough to say.

But here is screen shot from owners manual just to verify you are indeed turning it completely off.

Thank you for the response. I have disabled ESP completely and the issue persists.

I could be experiencing something similar on my 21 G63, might not be

Any aggressive take off from a stop, or giving it some gas in a turn, I can feel some sort of slight instant hesitation and what feels like tiny wheel slippage in the back or not enough traction. It's not seconds long, but a flash second or something like that then it catches and we're off. Noticed this almost instantly because I've driven numerous Porsches on those same roads same style and that didn't happen, I just chalked it up to being a 6000 pound truck with a lot of power on 285s..

This sounds very similar to what I’m experiencing. I’m starting to wonder if I may just need to swap out tires for something a little stickier.

If we are running A/T tires versus all season or some sort of SUV Michelin PS4S style tire that could be it.. be bold and run cup2s

I'm OK with the tradeoff personally if the G recommended A/T tire is 1) different and 2) maybe from durability longevity perspective. Something stickier on a SUV this big would have me concerned about wear faster

It's either wheel slippage or just kinda normal bog/ turbo lag. It is a very heavy car, and the bog down until you get boost from the turbos can cause this. Essentially until the turbo lag catches up and builds boost youre essentially just the 4.0L V8 (which is a small V8 by itself) so this heavy of a car could feel more bog down and turbo lag just because of the nature of the car.

I kind of know the feeling youre referring to and thats what it's always felt like to me.

Does the same feeling occur even if you dont have the car set on "comfort" mode, say vs sport, sport+? Throttle response is changed in that mode as well so that could be part of it.

Another possibility is if you have the auto start/stop on, and youre quick to let the brake off and go to the gas pedal, its possible its down even a little more on boost in that split second before the motor can catch up so to speak?

Try turning off auto start/stop and try it in Sport + to see if you have same results.

It’s definitely not turbo lag or stop/start. It’s a complete power cut (zero rpm) regardless of driving mode or ESP setting.

The power loss lasts about 2-3 seconds and then immediately kicks back in. If foot is still on accelerator when power comes back, you will get a nasty neck snapping jolt.

Oh, ok. This is description sounds like something else then.

Zero RPM? Like the engine shuts off completely? Then basically bump starts and takes off? Very odd.

If there is a big drop in engine RPM or it shuts off I dont know how the dealer couldn't replicate. Not to mention I would imagine the ECU would log start/stop, engine cut off, boost drops below normal range or above, misfires etc.

This is how OEMs can tell if youve tuned a car, because the boost output is logging abnormal amounts of boost, tell tale sign of a tune, even it is been re-flashed to stock parameters.

If its this abrupt and persistent issue, I would imagine the dealer could try a littler harder, and even if they didnt replicate it, at least talk to MB to see if they could figure out from the ECU logs what the motor is doing if indeed it is dropping that big in RPM, and basically turning off completely.

I would take it to another MB dealer for a different opinion, and demand they discuss it with MB Corporate.

At the very least make sure the issue has been logged, documented, and you keep paperwork for it so in the future if something catastrophic happens the car could potentially be covered under warranty that the issue existed prior and you brought it in to be addressed. IDK at a loss on this one. Surprised if it's this big of an issue the dealer cant replicate it. But I suppose thats not uncommon at stealerships.

Yes, exactly. The engine never shuts off but basically drops below idle RPM and the “bounces back” after a few seconds.

I was out today and was able to get the vehicle to consistently do it. I’m going to take a video and demand they look further into the issue.

Well if the RPM drops significantly that should also be able to be seen on ECU logs.

Also drop in RPM would then not indicate wheel spin because I guess that would be opposite and higher RPMs.

Wonder if there is a malfunction in the EPS, and it shows that it's completely off, you follow the process correctly, but it is indeed still on, and "stuck on" maybe? But that would be very odd also.

Drop in RPM like that would usually indicate some type of fuel pressure issue or something similar like that. Could be a fuel pump possibly failing, or vacuum leak, very tough to say with those symptoms.
