I believe the article states that the 2025 G550 will use the highly regarded 48-volt mild-hybrid inline-six turbo.

This excellent engine is a response to BMW's lauded B58 inline-six turbo, a better choice than the V8 in many instances.

Will this mild hybrid have its motor/generator integrated with the transmission, or will it be a gen 1 configuration hanging on the engine?

I also have a BMW with the inline-six turbo and imo it is a downgrade from the V8 M176 due to the turbo lag.

I would assume it is going to be the M256 with EQ boost, which is integrated into the transmission.

.

The MB 3.0L inline-6 turbo makes 429 HP in the AMG GT 53 and yields 24 MPG.

Less time spent at a fueling station and being able to drive further on a single tank may be appealing to people who value their time.

Regulations are the obvious answer, but Im sure Mercedes will enjoy charging more for a 6 cylinder next year compared to the current G550.

Yes it will have better mileage than the V8; but if mileage/range are a major concern, then not sure why one would opt for something that has the aero of a filing cabinet. This car is already ridiculous, so the V8 just adds to the fun and losing it is not a positive despite how some are trying to spin it.

Smaller more efficient and more powerful engines are hallmarks of progress and advancement. Formula One engines are the best example. Fear of change and nostalgia are just part of being human.

Formula 1 cars tend not to be shaped like bank vaults. Also its funny you mention fear of change for a vehicle that has largely remained unchanged from 1979; which also happens to be one of its biggest selling points.

Agreed. I’m all for a more fuel efficient engine if it performs the same or better than the current M176. My top concerns with the new V6 are turbo lag and overall performance. Also, I love the sound of a V8 and find it’s hard to reproduce in a V6. However, I’ll save my final judgement until I have a chance to drive the new model.

Although the G-class is not very aerodynamic, it has been changed dramatically since 1979 especially in 2018 when the aerodynamics and suspension and steering were vastly improved and the car was completely overhauled inside and out. The original 1979 G-class was powered by 4 and 5 and 6 cylinder gas and diesel engines and never had 8 cylinders until 20 years later when it became the soccer mom’s favorite car.

Tony, can you specify which dealership you sold yours to?
I’m looking to sell mine as well.

Thx!

@tonygwagon curious about why you prefer your 2021 G550 vs the ‘24 G63 you sold back? What makes you happy/sad about the two? I have a 2023 G550 and could not justify in my head spending $50-75k more for a G63.

Personally, I feel that the ride is better in the G550. The G63 definitely has better acceleration and will put a huge smile on your face but with 3 kids in the back I’m not exactly flooring it all the time. lol The G550 V8 feels identical at normal speeds. I also prefer the bull bar location on the G550. Looks more classic imo. Don’t get me wrong the G63 is an awesome truck but was it worth the $70k premium compared to what I paid for the 2021 G550? Not for me. However if/when I get a 2025 I would 100% get the G63 just to keep the V8…

When I had the choice I also ordered a G550 vice the G63. I drove them both and while I could afford either I still picked the G550 since it made more sense at the price point. However, I am going electric this time around!

As a counter point the G63 will keep its value better, so that's one way to rationalize the increase in price, although I will say the delta was much easier to rationalize in 2021 than in 2024.

Given MB had yearly price increases for the same exact G63 from 2019 onwards, I'm not looking forward to what the increase will be now that they can point to it having more power, new suspension and upgraded tech/infotainment as excuses.

The question is how much of an adm is palatable. dealer said i will be happier than others so i will take that!

also, when i stopped in to say to hi to my GM, i walked out buying a new 2024 AMG GT 53 and the last of the CLS450's... omg... love both... GT insane to drive and CLS never should have been discontinued... feels like a sporty S class which my parents have.

now i got use to MBUX and love it and cant wait to have in new G63.

will trade in my 2022 G63 with sticker of 212k and only 11k miles on it so hopefully will get a good trade

benz is killing it.

I hope so but I have not seen that info anywhere else, not even the MB Newsroom.

Today Mercedes-AMG posted a short teaser clip of the 2025 G63. It won’t be long now until we official details, photos, etc. Can’t wait for the order guide to see the full rundown of options, colors, and wheels!

Couldn't really see any new details on this preview vid but on the G500 one that was posted in another thread you can see they updated the doorhandle to have keyless entry.

Good catch! The article mentions keyless go. That will be weird to have keyless entry on these cars.

Also looks like they are changing the hood ornament to an AMG badge like others on this forum have already done!

Here is a second teaser clip for the 2025 G63. This one shows a bit more of the vehicle, including the revised controller on the center console.
