Do I Need Winter Tires

My G550 came with summer tires, question is do I need winter tires (see average weather below)? Retired, so don’t do anything too early, except golf in the summer. G Wagen is parked in a heated garage. Only snows once or twice and will just stay home that day. Snow is gone in a day or two. Mostly sunny dry days. Will not be taking it to snow country.

Right or wrong, personally I do not drive on the summer tires when it is under 45 degrees. I mean maybe if it's like 43-44 with forecast to get warmer soon, we're splitting hairs here, but definitely not when it's like 38-40 degrees.

If you drive later in the day it's probably less of an issue, especially if you have another car you can drive.

I don't think you need winter tires but you could change into all-seasons or all-terrain to be confident.

This is a great point, I wonder what tires the G580 comes with - I'll be receiving it in November I assume (start of winter time).

Curious what tires came with your 2025 G550. Pre-facelift I thought all the 20” options were all-season Pirelli. My guess is your use case doesn’t seem like you need dedicated winter tires. Are your tires true summer performance tires (eg. Pilot Sport 4 SUVs?) or do you mean more in the colloquial summer tire / winter tire sense? You could always consider something like CrossClimate2s if you want something more capable.

I replaced my summer tires with Continental Terraincontact ATs. Ride is the same to me. More aggressive look & year round tread.

Interesting. Definitely see your concern. You’re probably fine based on everything you said in your first post but I would want to have something different, myself.

I used to drive all-seasons for all my vehicles (sports cars were parked in the winter).

One winter I got a wild hair and bought blizzaks and threw them on a M3. The car was a beast in the WI winters.

Since then, I run separate winter and summer tire setups for all my cars (the 911 stays parked in winter). The g-wagon is invincible with winter tires.

Back on topic, I justify the extra set of tires as the sets last 2x as long since you are only running them 1/2 the year and you have better traction in summer and in winter.

To answer the OP, if you don’t get them you will need them. If you do get them you won’t need them.

I'm in the market for the same 2025 G550, on the same (base) wheels as you, and I cannot believe the standard tires are summer performance! I'm in the NE, so I would have assumed and hoped that the base tire on this truck would at least be all seasons. Instead they're Summer Performance on every single wheel/tire combo offered. And I live in an apartment, so I can't even store tires....

Agreed, they chased me out of the dealership to have me sign something stating I understood these tires are not to be used in cold weather. Luckily I had my winter from my previous G to use.

Heck, (I think) the g63 should come with all-terrains. Nobody is tracking these things and you know there will be plenty of “non-car people” who drive these tires in the winter thinking that their off-road icon with triple lockers is suitable for the snow….

it sounds like a pain switching and storing the sets

Depends on where you live. When I lived in an area that mandated winter tires, it was as simple and booking an appointment with the tire shop, showing up, and waiting about 20-30 minutes. Your second set are stored for you and it takes no more time than rotating your tires every 6 months. I think in areas where two sets of tires are a fact of life it’s quite simple.

I have a rack from tire rack that stores them well. (Prior to that I stacked them on the would rack to the right of the tire rack…prior to that I just stacked them in the garage.

I do my own maintenance so I just swap them when doing oil change or other maintenance…but I enjoy it.

It would be a hassle if you had to bring them some where for the swap, cart the extra set with you, etc…

Congrats on solving your original dilemma but now you have to decide if the new Toyota truck needs snow tires?

Good point. Actually we don’t get enough snow to worry and it’s gone in a few days.
