Can we talk about indoor public garages?

Got my first G Wagon a few weeks ago. Without even thinking the other day I'm driving into a garage and I hear the most awful THUNK noise any new car owner wants to hear.
I hit the top of my car into one of those warning barriers. Luckily no damage but it scared the living hell out of me.
So now I'm realizing, you can't treat a G Wagon like you do a Range Rover or X5... They are taller than the height of a lot of indoor garages.

But then I also got to thinking, these cars have air suspension... Why in the hell isn't there a lowering system so we can park them in indoor garages? And then I realized, I don't even know the height of the car.

I can't be the first person to have this concern or incident. What are the rules for height? Outdoor parking only from now on?

There are several threads regarding it. Many garages are 6.8 ft

Seems like a problem for the G

I will have to redesign my garage door height

Funny that you should bring this up today because I was measuring the height of the indoor garage at my work. The PVC warning pipe was 80” which is just 2.5” higher than the 2025 G63. Inside the garage there was more leeway (84”). Not sure why the tighter restriction at the entrance but it may take into account low-hanging signs deeper in the garage.

My work garage is the same--the warning pipe hangs lower than the actual inside of the garage.

Glad to know I'm not the only nut walking around the work garage with a tape measure--did that back in 2020 before I got my first G.

If you are in NYC weight is another issue. Many garages have elevators that don’t have the capacity to take a G Wagon (or most SUV’s and electric cars).

Don’t be that guy. You get your car into your garage scratch and dent free, only to open the hood, trunk, hatchback, or door, and hit the open garage door, or something out of place.
Also. External loads on the roof make your car effectively taller. Anyone ever see “Vacation”. Another Chevy Chase classic.

Yeah definitely have to watch out for public garages. When I first got my 2021 G550 I was pulling into a garage for a wedding event one evening and the attendant waived me down before I pulled in. Would have 100% hit the roof had I kept going. Not all heros wear capes.

Also worth noting that the AMG Offroad PRO Package brings the height up to 2039mm, or 80.3 inches compared to the standard 1971mm or 77.6 inches.

I never thought this would be an issue since the garage in my house is pretty big. I'm expecting delivery of the G580 tomorrow so I went to measure - the garage opening is exactly 80". With the way the garage door hangs, I have just a hair under 79". It's going to be close.

Showing a 250 mile range, further then I expected. The delivery tonight caught me a little off guard as I was expecting it tomorrow and had to head out to get my daughter when it arrived. But so far, it was a great ride. I liked it more then the Taycan. I'll do a more in depth review later this week.

80 inch (standard) garage door opening. 79 inch clearance with the door. It fits but with virtually no clearance. I can fit a piece of paper between the car and the garage door but not a magazine.

If it has a lift back, don’t open it in the garage.

All the current G-Klasse models have a rear swing-open door that is actually 5mm or .2 inches lower than the roof, so absolutely safe to open. Just make sure that one has at least 1086mm or 42.8 inches behind the vehicle in order to open the door properly.

Going to receive my 2025 next month and this had alwaysss been back of my mind. There's not a lot of parking garages in unincorporated LA, but in downtown and more populated areas I worry about it. There's some parking garages that doesn't display the height...so wth do I do

Is 2020 G63 and 2025 G63 has the height difference? Or both are the same height?

Hi @NINE11 -- Both the 2020 and 2025 G63 are the same height, 77.4 inches, unless a person orders the AMG Offroad Package Pro, as that includes the Professional Roof Luggage Rack. While the 2025 G63 order guide and MBUSA website do not currently list the height with the roof rack, a prior forum post on the now-discontinued G550 Professional Package mentioned the roof rack added 3 inches to the G’s height, and I believe the same roof rack is used for the Offroad Package Pro. Hope this helps.

If you go to the same garages over and over again I’d go and measure it with a tape measure. Find a few you know that work and only park there?
