Catalytic Converter Theft - Replacement Options?
The MB dealership repair estimate is around $8k (USD) with parts and labor split about 50-50. Before I spend that much or ding my comprehensive auto policy to put it back into stock form, I wanted to consult the collective knowledge of the board on whether there is a better aftermarket option for me. I am open to something more "vocal" and performance-oriented. Moreover, I am (theoretically) open to dedicating this particular truck to "off road only" and installing a completely cat-less system as long as I can avoid a constant CEL and the resonance / drone does not become completely unbearable for basic farm and trail usage.
Any thoughts or suggestions?
For context, the truck has 39k miles on it and is in stock form and virtually mint (save for the fact that it is running 50% "open headers" at the moment). It is now parked and stored securely pending my decision on the fix here.
It goes without saying that I will not be parking the truck in that location ever again, but with the cats being in a vulnerable place on our trucks, I am not sure that there is any way to protect completely against future theft.
Thank you to all!
Sincerely,
LWSG550

Or, do the smart thing and live in a place that is not communistic. As for no market for converters as it is illegal....well, drugs are illgal too.....yeah, that stopped. Now, for the OP - I would open pipe that thing all day long. The engine has a great rumble when it is not being suffocated.

HA HA HA HA HA HA HA!!!!! Seriously? I just left the shop where they are putting a catless on a S600. Just about every tuner as a catless option. One of the very first upgrades folks do is go catless. I am a bit upset, the only thing I have that is catless has dual 6.7ltr engines in it.....
BUT, to think that someone in a G cant afford a cat? Wow, what an apathetic way to look at life and free will.
Oh, as a note - where I lived in Illinois...ZERO inspections. Now I am in FL...Zero inspections. So, folks need to pull their heads out of the sand as to how effective these "inspections" are. Just came to mind, I used to "rent" the stock exausts from my VR4's and my 991 Turbo for folks in Chicago to bolt on and get thier inspections (and then put their performance exhausts back on).

"Being pulled over in a catless (no catalytic converter) vehicle is a serious offense, violating federal EPA laws and likely local regulations. Risks include heavy fines ($1,000 to over $5,000), vehicle impoundment, failed inspections, and, in some cases, potential insurance invalidation. It is often triggered by loud exhaust or strong odors. [[url=https://www.reddit.com/r/MINI/comments/15hyyd4/pulled_over_for_emissions_read_description_i_need/]1, 2, 3, 4, 5]
Key Consequences and Risks:
- Legal Fines: Removing or tampering with a catalytic converter is prohibited under the Clean Air Act, leading to substantial fines, sometimes ranging from $1,000 up to over $5,000, depending on the jurisdiction.
- Vehicle Impoundment/Defect Notice: Police can issue a defect notice or impound your vehicle until it is re-equipped with a functional catalytic converter.
- Failed Inspections: The vehicle will fail emissions tests and safety inspections.
- Law Enforcement Attention: A loud, "catless" car is often targeted for traffic stops.
- Insurance Issues: While some argue it may not affect liability, removing emission control devices can potentially cause issues with insurance claims. - Suspicion: Officers often notice the distinct smell of raw exhaust fumes.
- Inspection: They may check for the presence of the converter.
- Warnings vs. Tickets: Depending on the officer, you might get a warning if not driving aggressively, but a ticket is common in strict areas. - Reinstall: Reinstall a high-flow or factory catalytic converter to be legal.
- Legal Alternatives: Use CARB-approved converters if in a strict region (like California).
- Documented Repairs: If it was stolen, file a police report and have insurance cover it, or install a replacement immediately. [[url=https://www.reddit.com/r/MINI/comments/15hyyd4/pulled_over_for_emissions_read_description_i_need/]1, 2]

I do not know a single MB driver who does not wish they did not have the AMG version of their particular car, right down to the R63. Heck, most of the folks near me in AMG cars are only in it because it was the "Best One on the lot" when they were shopping....besides, the S63 costs less than their horse.....
Just to be clear on the catless options, I recognize the practical (smell and noise) and theoretical (EPA enforcement) downsides to that. As I mentioned in my initial post, converting to catless straight pipes means dedicating the vehicle to off-road / farm use only. I do have a use case for that so long as running no mufflers will not result in annoying levels of resonance. Another option is restoring the stock cat on the driver's side (or installing less restrictive cats on both cylinder banks) and then incorporating more performance-oriented mufflers behind the cats.
Does anyone have firsthand experience with aftermarket muffler options for our Gs? I do not want anything that requires exhaust outlets protruding from under the running boards like the G63s as that will impair my ground clearance. In fact, one of the primary reasons that I got a G550 instead of a G63 in the first place was keeping small enough brake rotors to run 18-inch wheels and use tires with taller sidewalls (e.g., K03s) and still being able to have roof clearance in my garage. I guess that makes me the singular exception to preferring the truck that I purchased to the AMG version of it!

if or my car there is absolutely no question I would not go back to stock. I'm not saying it would be loud but I know for a fact it would not be stock.

You can get catted downpipes from Redstar between $4-5K for a full set

Much akin to healthcare (ANY male between 18 and 62 who pays monthly for health insurance is a fool). We pay and pay and pay for the ignorance of others and "bad luck". I have three of my cars registered to one business or other....it is shocking what we can and cant do with a business policy that we cant get away with as far as coverages. It is all a game.
