Will there be a 2006 G-Class in the USA?

With the Diamler/Chrysler announcment that G-Class production will continue indefinately does anyone know what this will mean to G-Class availability in the US? Will we continue to see the G-Class for sale through MB USA in 2006 and 2007 or will it just be sold in Europe?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Stuttgart/Graz, Nov 11, 2005
DaimlerChrysler will continue to produce its “classic off-roader” in the coming years. On behalf of Mercedes-Benz, the company Magna Steyr has manufactured over 185,000 units of the legendary G-Class in Graz, Austria, since 1979. The car continues to be very popular among customers, and it has been part of the Mercedes product lineup for the past 26 years.

“By continuing to produce the G-Class in Graz and manufacturing all E-Class variants at our main plant in Sindelfingen from 2007, we have found a viable solution for both partner,” explains Dr. Dieter Zetsche, DaimlerChrysler Board of Management member and head of the Mercedes Car Group. “We are delighted that we can continue our successful and long-standing cooperation with Magna Steyr. Mercedes-Benz wrote automotive history by always ensuring that the G-Class remained state of-the-art over the past 26 years, and it will continue to offer its customers the very latest technology in the future,” says Zetsche.

Yep. G in the USA for at least the next 5 years. That's the deal. I'm looking forwards to it!

Positive as I can be about this one. I order a ton of these every year and knew a year in advance that management had agreed to shut down the Steyr plant in Austria (where the G-Class is the only MBZ still assembled by hand and not robots) as a cost-cutting, modernization decision. The 4-Matic is done there BTW by the same company. They were going to move the 4-Matic work somewhere else as well and shut down the Steyr plant.
Then fans of the G got into a tizzied state and I guess MBZ heard about it so they decided to produce 600 more G55's during the last half of 2005 and special-labelled them - and they all sold.
All of the sudden MBZ announced that they had 'decided' to keep the plant open at Steyr to keep producing the G and 4-Matic (this was in the last couple of months and I could look it up, but...). The reason? I don't know. It was announced by official MBZ press release. Included in the release(?) and in the subsequent german press was the fact that they had agreed to a five year extension on the G with the Stehyr plant. The 4-Matic is still to be done there, but they may also be doing it somewhere else now as well (wherever they had previously decided to move the work after they had made the final decision to shutdown Steyr).
(Rumour has it that) I have several G55's and some G-XXL's on order with AMG Manufaktur right now that are being built in the Steyr plant -- so it is a fairly important issue to me and I follow it fairly closely.
I may not have all of the facts and I may be in error on some of my understanding on all of the details; and I have not much to do with MBZ, AMG, or Daimler-Chrysler Management decisions (LOL) but the fact that they're continuing the G for the next five years is true at this point in time. The G500 (550?) and G55 will be sold in the USA (and Canada?) markets for sure -- at least in 2006 and 2007, and I don't see why they would discontinue after that. It is also said that the G will get some updating for the 2007 MY.
Good news, all.

ClayJ are you a dealer or do you import and export G's? Or do you just love the car that much that you order several cars at a time?

I am an 'automotive entusiast' as I like to call it. People who know me well say that I am an 'automobile addict'. I own three companies that import, export, and modify and customize cars for clients. One of them primarily focuses on MBZ's, supercars, and exotics. That company does do a bunch of G's.
I just happen to personally like the G55 and the G-XXL. Hearsay has it that I own and use several residences around the world and that I have one of those or a Land Rover at each of my residences to fill the slot of All-Weather Onroad/Offroad Passenger Vehicle.
-- but I "can neither confirm nor deny that due to interntional security reasons" LOL

When you do an -XXL you can choose your powerplant. Obvious choices are the 5.5 kompressor, the biturbo V12, and a V8 diesel (to be turbocharged later this year). Very good stuff!

You're looking at over EUR 170,000 -- $250K USD with interior upgrades...they are pricey!

The Grand Edition G55's were a good deal for two reasons: 1-they made 600 more G55's instead of ending production...(and when they all sold MBZ decided to keep making the G55; otherwise they would have stopped making them alltogether) and 2- they added a new paint color, Xxxx Black.
So no, they weren't just a marketing gimmick to boost sales (the original idea was a 25th anniversary commemorative special edition to finish off the model in style); and the fact that MBZ made them and that they all sold prevented or altered favorably the demise of the G55.
Good Stuff!
