Took delivery about 1 month ago- less than 1000 miles

The good- zenons, more seat cushioning, centerstack & less steering effort

The bad- loss of steering wheel controls for all radio functions. you must know reach over to change stations and adjust volume. Can you imagine. No Teleaid

& The ugly- brakes are horrible. already had front rotors and pads replaced- excessive squeel and now its back in for the exccesive pedel pressure thats required to stop. Dont know if changes where made to the brake system.

just to let you guys know this is my 3rd g (2003 & 2005) so it know how the brakes are supposed to feel.

Overall dissapointed

...........I've been trying to tell anyone who will listen to my rant, that MB has been experimenting with the G. They lucked out and perfected it with the 05 G55 which will go down as one of the best cars ever made. My opinion, get an 05 G55 for the same or possibly lower price than what you got. The lack of steering wheel conrols in the 2007.5 was published in this forum already. It is some type of amalgalm of the new DVD nav and the old steering wheel controls. MOST vs D2B. People wanted DVd NAV, so MB stuck it in there.

Thats good to know because I was thinking about trading my 05 G55 in for the 07 only because I want the zenons, but I have been hearing the 05 G55 is the best G-wagen made.

The first 2007.5 G-wagens are just being delivered here in Dubai (new instrument cluster, reversing camera, tire pressure monitoring system) and so far I've only heard good things. Of course, the friend who got one got a G55 which has different brakes than the G500.

can you say definitively that steering wheel controls are or are not on the 2007.5 Gs?

The opposite in fact. The most recent G-Class vehicles being delivered in Dubai have a new dash (including speedo and DVD nav), bi-xenon headlamps, reversing camera, tire pressure monitoring, etc. and the steering wheel from the CLS with all the controls.

They look just like this:

............if this is true then it really sucks for people who bought the 2007.5 model because it still had the 2005 steering wheel, but had a dvd NAV that was not controlled by the steering wheel.

that's very promising. thanks.

i will decline an MY2006 G55 with <5000 miles offered at 82k, although i know the previous owner and the transaction would be mediated by my preferred dealer, and await the right deal on the most recent G.

07 G500
Just bought a 07 G with granite gray ext with black interior for my wife. We love the way it drives and its presence. 7 speed works beautifully with this engine. For the size of this truck, the acceleration is impressive. I do miss the steering wheel control and tele-aid. Only problem I encountered is a license plate light blub which burnt out and was replaced at the dealer.

I have owned it for only a week.

G500 07
David,

The G has a decent pick up. Prior to driving the G, I owned a '02 996 Cab, '99 996 Cab, '96 ///M3. I traded in a 05 Lexus LS 430 for the G.
I am impressed with the acceleration on the G. Its certainly not comparable to a 996 and not even a LS 430 but overall a respectable pick up. I would guess the 0 to 60 is in the high 7s to low 9s... just a guess... It sure sounds alot faster.
The engine and fan noise is simply loud. My wife was pulling out of the garage when I was activating the home alarm. I couldn't even hear the home alarm activation alert due to the engine note and fan from the G.
Overally, I like this SUV. It has a certain flare of "wow". There are faster cars, more expensive cars, more powerful cars... But nothing excites me like a G for some reason...

I could not agree with you more. We have a CLS55k and a Range Rover HSE both tricked out impeccably.... We also have a bone stock G with the exception of a nice sub/amp. My wife and I agree hands down that the G is our most preferred car to drive.
It is the the Rolls Royce Phantom of SUVs....!

i was just talking with an MBer, who said he's trying to learn whether the 500 will receive the 550 engine during MY2008. if not, then i'll probably stick with the AMG model, whatever the powerplant is then.

please tell me, are there any auxiliary receptacles in the G? i looked around floor models recently, and reviewed mbusa webpages, but found nothing.

also, i was inquiring again about fording depth, which i believe is 18" or 19" at low speed. i was told that as the civilian G has evolved into the rugged luxury realm, electronics were run low. i wondered whether exhaust pipe location also was a reason, but received no reply.

would you or anybody know whether submerging whatever electronics are mounted low cause the G to stall or just disable amenities? and would continuous running with exhaust submerged stall the G?

David,

I have been looking for the aux input with no success. On the control monitor, "aux" button is displayed when you are listening to the radio, however, i have not been been able to locate the aux receptacle. I spoke to a local MB technician regarding this but he was clueless. I don't think the 07 G has the aux receptacle (I searched, then searched some more and then some). My 07 G was manufactured in December 2006. Maybe the later production G's have this sorted out. AMG would be a great choice. I am looking for a black G55 for myself. My wife took over the G500 and has become her daily driver.

The 2006 and earlier G-Class (CD-ROM based COMAND system) do have an AUX input, but it is not wired. You have to get the right cable from Mercedes, remove the head unit and connect it to the AUX input terminals on the back of the COMAND system, and then run the wire wherever you want it. It would be more convenient if it was pre-wired, but at least it's possible. On the 2007+ G-wagen (DVD-ROM) I have no idea whether it is possible or not. Instead you can probably get an official MB iPod kit or sat radio.
