Help? Aesthetics. A lot of people install them here (Dubai) saying that it helps with lateral stability, such as when off-roading in the desert (dune bashing)...but really I don't really believe that.
I was a bit worried about possible damage to the wheel bearings, but my dealer tells me that these H&R 30mm spacers are TÜV certified for the W463 (G-Class) and they have customers who have had them installed for many years without any ill-effects.

Almost even in the back, and a little further out in the front because the front wheel arches are slightly narrower than the rear. My guess is a 20mm spacer on either side would be just perfect, but I couldn't find something available designed for the G-Class that had all the desired approvals/certification.
