Different OEM Exhausts for G55 MY2003

Does anyone know the difference in performance between these two exhausts for the G55. Or does anyone know why two different types were offered?

All the G55's I've seen other than mine have the Type I as pictured (Dual Tip, Dual Side). Mine is the only one I've seen thus far with the Type II (Single Tip, Dual Side).

I thought it was because I have an earlier 2003 G55 but I've seen other early model G55's with the Type I exhaust so I'm thinking it was ordered from the factory this way.

Any ideas anyone?

Type I

Type II

Hope everyone can see the diagrams now. I had to re-link the files.

Is this a US spec G? I have never seen a G55 with Type II Exhaust.

It's a Japanese spec G which is the same as a Euro Spec model. I do know the original owner chose a few specs himself. I'm thinking the exhaust is one of them.

Or it could be the additional muffler adds back pressure, increasing the mid range torque but decreasing top end? Possible?

Maybe to meet noise restrictions in Japan?

I would say that's wishful thinking. As far as I'm aware adding a third muffler will not increase performance and in most cases only reduce it.

I guess it might be time to start looking for parts #188 and #198 from the first Type and replace them with mine. I'm not sure if it would be that straight forward though. The ends of the cats look different on both diagrams.

Wow, never seen that type II before but it looks like a sound reducer, probably to make it quieter to meet some country noise regulations.
