Negative Top Gear review

Apparently they don't get it...

http://www.topgear.com/uk/car-news/m...ive-2012-05-14

Pretty stark difference from their review a couple of years back...

There are always those who won't get it. If you've visited Uganda in East Africa, you'll see lots of G55s as well as the standard models around. By lots I mean more than I have seen in Western Europe or the U.S.. They are liked for their toughness to withstand potholes and go off-road. In the case of the AMG they are also liked for the power. If I'm not mistaken, due to the suspension and chassis strength, they are also much cheaper to maintain than other off-roaders.

I'm sure if it was a Land Rover he'd be singing it's praises...besides the previous review was by Richard Hammond who had a much more open minded perspective.

From the above Evo review:
That Mercedes is producing cars as truly bonkers as the G63 and G65 in this age of sensibility is something all car enthusiasts should celebrate.

........also the published acceleration specs for the G63 is really no different from that of the G55. 0-60 5.4 secs. This miight also affect sales. As with the new CLS 63, the real life figure following a tune might be different.

2013 G 63 AMG
Demand for the 2013 G-Class is very high. In fact, I've read that there have been more pre-orders for the G63 than for the new SL63. Also, nearly 300 G65's have already been ordered by dealers. The factory in Graz will be running double shifts for civilian G-Class production through August to meet the initial surge of demand.

Continued production through 2020 is possible.

G65 is about 50K Euros more then S65 in Germany.
It would have to be close to $300k in States,a crazy # for that truck.

Richard Hammond once said about the G55: the coolest car in the world.

That some "Paul Horrell" dude hired by Top Gear magazine is jabbering about cornering and gas mileage clearly proves he doesn't get the G-Class AMG.

"Not getting it" is what makes the GWagen so appealing.

.......I relate to the AMG version of the G class the way I affectionately relate to Lambos. They are bold and the experience of driving them is just so raw and emotional. It's like making love to a woman with whom you have a deep connection. It doesn't matter that she got wild and tried to scratch your face, the experience remains exhilarating and no one but you will understand it. You thank God that such a woman that can stir your soul exists.

I guess I don't get it either.

The G-class, by itself is awesome, and I like it a lot. But the high powered AMG motors didn't add much value to me. Sure, if you really want big acceleration in a brick, thats probably the best way to get there, but I don't really want/need that from a G.

If anything, I'd want a manual, diesel G-class

As an owner of 4 AMGs I concluded after a test drive of a G55 that while it looks cool and sounds incredible it is the worst handling car ever. Not fun to drive fast anywhere but in a straight line and a waste of money if all you are going to do is drive slow and revel in the ignorant adulation of passersby

.......there is actually no adulation because few on the road know what G55 is. So I doubt that anyone buys the G55/63 for adulation. Of course the G55/63 make zero sense, especially since the G550 is already very capable. But the moment you try to make too much sense of it, you would have already missed the allure. The point is that it makes no sense at all. The SLS has gullwing doors, that serve absolutely no purpose but look very cool. Why do Lambos have Lambo doors? The Aventador has a start button fashioned to look like that of a fighter jet. All for pantomime and fun. There are things that exist just for the pure fun of it all. Yes, the world does not need a 612HP G65, but I am so glad AMG made one. An 80 year old billionaire does not need a 25 year old hot super model, but he is happy to die with here breasts all over his face. If you've ever owned a toy that makes you smile from ear to ear like a little kid, you'll get it. Otherwise in won't make sense at all
