G63 awaiting ECU upgrade

Hi Guys,

My first post here. Recently picked up a G63 and tomorrow it gets it's new ECU from RENNtech. Will post feedback after initial shock hits it's peak

Looks great. What is the interior configuration? How is the stock ride compared to your 08?

I saw the ecu mod on the G63 but not sure what to expect. Looking fwd to your feedback/review.

Also, what did they give your for the 08 on trade?

Already done that to my wife's G.
Acceleration is even more violent then her old G55 Kleemann.

Ugh. I'm pretty happy with my G55. But I'm starting to get the bug here.

Looking forward to hearing more. Definitely made a noticeable difference on my CLS63 and I am wondering if the extra weight of the G63 will make it more or less noticeable/dramatic.

2013 G63
Initial thoughts after ECU upgrade

Ok, not sure where to start other than to say if you have or plan to buy a G63 then you HAVE TO spend the extra $3500 for the RENNtech ECU upgrade. OMG- the torque is ridiculous. I am not a "top speed" kind of guy, but the thrill of thrust off the line is what excites me. This does the trick. The difference is more than noticeable at the first press of the pedal and I can assure you that I was already impressed with the stock performance specs. No BS, it's laughable and a bit terrifying at the same time. I was able to chirp a tire today getting onto a freeway onramp and I was nowhere near "kickdown."

I'm glad we are heading into the weekend as I plan on putting a lot of needless mileage on it over the next few days. I will be sure to post any worthy comments by Monday if I think it may be of use to you guys, but I've gotta say, no regrets whatsoever. Actually, I take that back, I regret having played golf today because I was only able to squeeze in about 12 miles after the upgrade, heading from office to the golf course!

So...for those of you on the fence, do not second guess this upgrade. I am going to hit the freeway tomorrow to film a short clip that I will post over the weekend.

Lastly, I installed the upgrade at 1007 miles on the G, as I did my best to observe all of the break-in suggestions which were not to exceed 85mph/4500rpm and no "kickdowns" for the first 1000 miles. The manual also called for changing the locking diffs oil at 1000 miles which I did, though I am not sure that was critical; I just like to stick to the recommendations.

Happy Friday and have a great weekend...

Adam

The interior is the standard black with piano black lacquer wood trim. The ride as compared to my G55K is a bit less "harsh," more sedan like if anything. Still a stiff G, but more comfortable over bumps and potholes, etc. Not a single rattle like my previous 3 G wagons all suffered.

I got 70k for my 08 G55k trade, probably (or certainly) could have done better selling it on my own but I needed to perform quick. I didn't pre-order the G63, someone else did and they passed on it and there was a lot of interest in it from other parties...I had no time to waste. If anyone here is looking for a super-clean G55k with only 27k miles, check out MB of Escondido. I upgraded all of it's exterior to the 2009+ grille, rims, etc.

Happy motoring,

Adam

Thanks for the update.

So the G63 Renntech ECU produces:
  • 669 HP @ 5500 RPM; 734 LB-FT @ 3800 RPM
  • +133 HP and +174 Torque
The G65 is producing:
  • 612HP @ 4300RPM
  • 737 Torque @ 2300 RPM
  • 0-60 time:5.3 sec
I think this is money well spent. Any thoughts on doing the transmission upgrade?

PM me if you find yourself on San Francisco and want to meet up.

I don't know much about the transmission upgrade, what can you tell me?

But you are spot-on regarding the value of the ECU mod!

I'm in SF weekly and will be sure to PM you before crossing the bridge next go around

Sounds like a plan. Maybe we can do a quick video off the line between my G55 and your G63r. But I'm not sure I want to know the answer, let alone be this guy \

I did intend to post a video over the weekend but never got out of the house, watching football games all weekend.

Video tomorrow, on the way to work.

I can't seem to find the dyno chart for the ECU. Can you find it? As I recall, the upgrade causes the peak power to be made at higher revs.

I'll ask Renntech for the dyno chart, I did see one but can't remember where, perhaps Google. I do know that whatever the ECU is causing, I like.

Unhappy

I have over 5k miles on it already, visits to Culver Military Academy to visit our son does that pretty quick.
The acceleration from 50 to +80 is just ridiculous,of course yesterday I had to do it right before a bridge with a hiding Indiana Trooper....

Classic! That's the problem with this thing, it doesn't want to drive slow

I can already tell that tire consumption isn't going to be pretty!

You going to upgrade the transmission with Renntech? I spoke to them on the phone and they said that the rear transfer case can have some issues with the extra power during hole shots/0-60/etc. Apparently people are breaking these things. He also said you can get the truck to do an AWD burnout if you but the truck into low gear and floor it - and that's where a lot of the issues come from.

Sounds like I am going to need to strongly consider the transmission upgrade...thanks for the head up on current issues being reported.

The paddle shifters are a blast and I fully intend to use them regularly, so this sounds like a no-brainer!

Thanks again

No problem. The bad news is that you MUST send the car down to Renntech in FL. Your local dealer can't do the upgrade or Renntech won't allow it [not sure which it is].

Bummer, because that isn't going to happen. I guess I can only hope that if the transfer case fails me I can run it through warranty. Obviously I am aware that I now have warranty risks as it is with the ECU mod. Fingers crossed!

Car has to be brought to Renntech to do that flash? Why? All previous Renntech mods could be performed at my local dealer.

You can send the ECU to Renntech for the flash or some local dealers can do it. However, the entire truck must be brought to Renntech for the transmission upgrade.
