IMO, they should have done something to it to make it stand out from the G63 other than a change of rims. Take for instance the difference between the S63 and S65. There are a few exterior differences and some subtle differences on the inside. I'm not sure how going from a V8 to a V12 and throwing on some rims justifies a $70k bump from a new G63.
there are more differences. chromed grill and lower fasica and some embossed amg logos inside. also - my dealer sent me the 2016 g-class brochure (who knew these even still existed?) and in the back is a listing of the various package and option offerings by g-class flavour. if you get yourself one of these brochures - all will be explained - but at first glance - in addition to your aforementioned power boost and the chrome and logos mentioned above - the g65 offers:
1/ no "eco start/stop" system (yay!);
2/ an amg front sport seat standard (optional on g63 and not available on the 550);
3/ stainless steel brush guard as a no-cost option (where it comes standard on the other two variants);
4/ standard "exclusive nappa leather" (optional on g63 and not available on the 550);
5/ optional "carbon fibre look" leather trim (not available on the other two variants); and
6/ 21" wheels
and probably some other bits and bobs i missed. but the BIG question that remains is why benzo still insists on charging us $250 for the (optional!!!!) heated steering wheel on these rigs! really!?

I'll double down on what ajm0623 stated above and.....738lb-ft torque@640HP vs. 561lb-ft torque@563HP. So, there's your justification I guess :confused
I've driven both a 2016 G63 and a 2016 G65 and the difference you feel in power is negligible at best. Being able to sense the difference between 563HP and 640HP is difficult to do and certainly not worth $70k. I understand some of the other differences between the two vehicles but most of the those can be had in the G63 as options - nappa leather, amg front sport seats - so theoretically for another $70k you get a bump of 77HP, 21" wheels, no eco start/stop (which can easily be turned off in sport mode in a G63), and an optional carbon fibre leather trim. Doesn't sound worth it to me. MB should have made this thing look great given its the first time the G65 has entered the US market. The fact that dealers have these sitting on the lot and are not pre-sold or marked up with $25k ADM tells you quite a bit about the demand.

Wanted to order one for my wife but the GM of my dealer flatly refused saying he didn't want me to be mad at him because of disappointment with the new car vs G63.
They will sell every V12 they make. But MB has long resisted simple and obvious upgrades that would improve the overall looks of the AMG gwagens. Too many plastic parts on the exterior trim that fade over time and lack of little things like cup holders and remote start, keyless go, surround view cameras for off roading. And while I appreciate the need to maintain the look and hope they never change it; it's hard to believe they haven't offered an extended wheelbase version to give the rear passengers more room. The cash-cowification of this legacy platform is really impressive.

Well said; a (slightly) longer wheelbase would be ideal considering MB's clear pride in the timeless G design. Not to mention the other military/commercial cuts that exist in the G platform. Other than basic cosmetics and routine tech upgrades as mentioned, you can't do too much to the G-Wagen...imo
