Important Motor Oil question?

Important Motor Oil question?
Hello to all people, especially those who like to thrash their high milers. What oil can you recommend? A friend who repairs engines told me not to use new oils like Mobil 1 or any OW-40, 5W-30, etc. in any car, new or old. He said that these oils are supposed to increase performance and fuel economy during the warranty period and neglect the engine lubrication so that the engine could need an overhaul as early as 50,000 miles. He also said that the new intervals between oil changes as used by MB, BMW and others are too long and only contribute to engine wear. His conclusion to keep an engine running over 150,000 to 200,000 miles without problems was to change the oil every 6,000 to 9,000 miles and use a 10W-60 or comparable viscosity. Is this true. Who can help me out in rating this explanation?
Thanks for all you thoughts.
Frank

My boyfriend just took his car in to a mechanic because there's a clicking/ticking sound when he starts his car when the engine is still cold. He immediately said, "You've been using Mobile 1, didn't you?". Everyone assumed that Mobil 1 is the best and of course it's brand name. He then told us to switch to other brands because Mobile 1 is actually wearing out the engine. As far as the ticking noise, it has been less noticeable after he switched to Castrol Synthetic.

I was lead to believe that synthetic oils keep their velocity much longer. Therefor mileage’s between oil changes became higher and infact the main problem with the oil changes was the filters not being able to cope with the prolong life expected of them.

I use Valvoline Synthetic in my 99Z 10w-30.
My wife gets the M1 from MB in her 02 C240.
Now, with that said: It is my understanding that Mobil1 1 Trisythetic is not fully synthetic. I can't remember which competitor was using a synthetic/dino blend and was marketing it as fully synthetic. M1 took them to court and the court said it was cool for them to say that as long as they use X% synthetic. Therefore, M1 decideds it is cool to do the same because it saves them $$$$$$.
The new M1 stuff for older cars is crap based on those oil reports things the guys at www.ls1tech.com run on their oils.
