SLR McLaren

I've got a question from a discusion a friend and I had. We were talking about the differences of the SLR and McLaren. Are they different cars, or are they the same? I don't know to much about them. They are and always will be too expensive for me. I always thought they were the same car, he was trying to tell me they aren't. Can someone help clear this up for us? Also, he didn't believe that there were mercedes out there that could beat Ferrari's.

Perhaps you are confusing the SLR McLaren by MB and the separate McLaren F1 (1994-1998)...?

Too expensive? They are only about $400,000!

Mercedes calls their top-of-the-line sport model an SLR Maclaren. Just a guess, but I'd say that might out run some of the Ferraris.

If you're talking about Formula One, NO WAY, Ferrari still dominates that, as far as I know. Buy maybe it's because M. Schumacher is behind the wheel, who knows?

No, I'm just talking about normal sreet cars here. I'm not confusing them with formula 1 cars. I just want to know that if I see a SLR it is a McLaren. Is this fact? That they are the same? Oh, and $400K is a lot when you have to work hard for it

The Mercedes SLR McLaren was designed jointly by Mercedes and McLaren (Mercedes forced the issue to make the car more street-friendly and more of a Grand Tourer than a Supercar -- ticking off McLaren in the process with the compromises necessary to achieve that goal, such as the weight of the car).

It is built by McLaren at a McLaren factory specially built by Mercedes and McLaren with Mercedes money.

The powertrain (engine and transmision) is pure AMG Mercedes. I believe that the brakes are as well.

If you see an SLR it is a Mercedes-McLaren. In the USA we tend to call it a 'Mercedes SLR'; in Britain they tend to call it a 'McLaren SLR'....

I had hoped that I was speaking to the confusion and had cleared it up a little bit....

There is quite a bit of reading that can be done on the McLaren - Mercedes joint venture with the SLR as they have squabbled quite a bit over the years about it - and alot of that made it into the media....

If they squeal, they're AMG/MB alright!
